This week’s episode of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD will see a big introduction for the show, as Bill Paxton makes his debut as Agent John Garrett, in a new recurring role. Garrett is a character straight out of Marvel Comics, who was first introduced in the classic Frank Miller/Bill Sienkiewicz 1986 miniseries Elektra: Assassin. On Agents of SHIELD, Garrett is an old colleague of Coulson’s and Agent Ward’s former commanding officer.

On the set of Agents of SHIELD last month, executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen explained, “We wanted to show someone who may have had a history with Coulson on the field, but just has a different perspective of how to be on the field. Coulson is very by-the-book, and I think Garrett's just not. So to show that dynamic, and of course the dream of casting Bill Paxton in that part…”

Tancharoen’s husband and fellow SHIELD EP, Jed Whedon, noted, “We actually discussed Bill Paxton in the room, when we were talking about the character,” noting it was just a pipe dream at the time and they felt there was little chance of Paxton, known for everything from Weird Science to Big Love, actually being cast. “Then when he came up as an actual possibility, we couldn't believe it.” Both Tancharoen and Whedon said they were having a fantastic time working with Paxton, with Whedon remarking, “We geek out so hard. He has so many good stories, and he doesn't mind telling them, which makes it so fun." Added Tancharoen, “The other day on set, he said, ‘I’ve been killed by an alien, a Terminator and a Predator. Who else can say that?’ Nobody!”

As for the character of Garrett and how he relates to the team, Tancharoen said, "He's a different guy to add to the mix, but he is definitely somebody you want in your corner. You see the value in why he's there, and the whole team knows that.” Added Whedon, “He's sort of a tough love character, which is always fun when that person gives you love, because you feel like you've earned it. That aspect of him is great.”

Tancharoen noted, “I think maybe Fitz and Simmons don't necessarily understand his humor. He sort of nudges them like, ‘Come on, you guys are too serious!’”
When it came to the Coulson/Garrett dynamic, Clark Gregg remarked, “You know, everybody has that friend that knows a little too much about them. I would say that Bill Paxton's character and Agent Coulson are both that to each other. I always think about this scene in Thor where Agent Coulson walks out with this megaphone to deal with this giant, metal death monster in the desert, and he's like, ‘Oh God, what do we got now?’ I thought that was such a telling scene, because I thought, ‘What has his week been like that this is a little boring to him?’ When you see the repartee between Agent Coulson and Agent Garrett, you go, ‘Yeah, these guys have been through one too many weeks like that.’ I also like that they're both of a similar age so that they get to tease each other about how slow they are getting up and stuff like that. That's fun for me."

Gregg added that when it came to Paxton himself, 'I'm just such a huge fan of his. He's brought such a hilarious, everyman quality of his own and a comic flair to such amazing movies, from A Simple Plan to Aliens. Once I got over being a little starstruck by having him around, we've been having a lot of fun.”

The cast all had glowing things to say about Paxton, with Brett Dalton describing him as “One of the coolest people I've met. He's great.”

Said Ming-Na Wen, “I finally today geeked out on him, because he's been on the set for a couple of weeks. It's been a couple of weeks working with him, and I finally just found a moment where I was like, ‘Okay, I just have to tell you, I was a huge fan of Aliens! Hudson! Oh my God, you made that movie!’”

Bill Paxton makes his Debut on Marvel's Agents of SHIELD on Tuesday, March 4th on ABC.
