Goyer Talks Dr. Strange & Ghost Rider

Screenwriter David Goyer, who recently announced that he was in early talks to direct the feature film version of Marvel Comics' Doctor Strange, slipped IGN FilmForce a few more details about that project and Ghost Rider, which he also scripted. (Last year, I reviewed a now rejected Ghost Rider script penned by Goyer.) Regarding Ghost Rider, Goyer advised IGN FilmForce that "(t)here's not much I can say right now – per the Daily Variety story this morning, obviously a lot of high-level talks are going on with Ghost Rider. Much will be determined in the next 2 weeks." The Variety story Goyer's referring to is the official news that Nicolas Cage is in talks to star as Ghost Rider.

Goyer was more forthcoming about his other pending Marvel/Dimension Films project. "As for Doctor Strange – there is a mechanism in place that would allow me to write and direct the film, but first, I need to write and direct my adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Murder Mysteries for Dimension. I did write a script for Dr. Strange for Columbia about 6 years ago, but it didn't go very well. There were elements of the story that I liked – but in all likelihood, I would start from scratch this time. Just as I did with Ghost Rider."

Since Doctor Strange would only be Goyer's third time behind the camera as director, how would the still novice filmmaker handle the story's sure-to-be complicated special effects? "I would attempt to use as many practical effects and in-camera tricks as possible. I like CG (computer-generated imagery) the most when it is done subtly," Goyer reveals.
