AI Use in Patient Care

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly evolving form of technology. Its use in improving processes has spread to almost every area of life, including health care. Johns Hopkins may use artificial intelligence technology to support clinical decisions and treatment planning, as well as other clinical and administrative activities.
One example of the use of AI in health care at Johns Hopkins is AI Scribe.
AI Scribe – Streamlining Medical Note-Taking
Our providers have access to a computer program that uses AI to draft a clinical summary from a transcript of a recording of the visit. This helps them spend more time listening to and talking with patients instead of note-taking during visits.

Frequently Asked Questions
-

With your consent, the technology records the visit with your provider. Using AI, it analyzes the transcript of the recording to draft a clinical summary of the visit that includes key details, such as symptoms you share, questions your provider asks and the care plan you discuss. Your provider then reviews the note for accuracy before it is finalized. This helps your provider get an accurate record of your visit while focusing more on you.
 -

The recording allows the system to create a transcript of what was discussed during your visit so it can create a draft note for your provider.
 -

The recording is stored temporarily on a secure server, and it is used to create a transcript of the visit, confirm the quality of the output and improve the technology of the product. The recording and transcript are then routinely deleted to protect your privacy.
 -

The recording and transcripts are retained only temporarily and are not part of the medical record, so we are unable to provide a copy to patients. You will be able to see the completed note developed with technology support in your medical record and MyChart account.

Yes, it is your choice. If you decide you do not want this AI technology used for your visit, just let your care team know. Your provider can still take care of you without using the tool.

Your privacy is very important to us. All recordings are stored safely and securely in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, and they are routinely erased at regular intervals. Many health systems across the country are using similar technology to improve patient care while maintaining the highest standards for privacy and security.
