Sylvia Fowles
Sylvia Fowles was a force of nature. As the anchor of the championship-caliber Minnesota Lynx defense for eight straight seasons, she dominated the painted area her entire career. Altering shots, battling for rebounds under the boards, and striking fear into opponents were just the basic tools of the four-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year. A 2004 McDonald’s All-America at Gulliver Prep in Miami, Fowles led her high school teams to three Florida state championships. She left her hometown to join the Bayou Bengals at LSU, where the three-time All-America helped the program to four straight NCAA Final Four appearances. The second pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft earned eight All-Star nods, All-Defense honors eleven times, and led the league in rebounding three seasons and blocks for another two. Fowles helped the Lynx win two WNBA championships, including the 2017 title when the imposing force with the warm personality was named regular season MVP and Finals MVP. Fowles retired as the WNBA’s all-time leading rebounder and first in career field goal percentage.
