Neptune’s Fortune (Crown, Jan. 27, 2026)

By Julian Sancton AGENCY Aevitas

It’s an Indiana Jones logline: “A man who looked like Hemingway” seeks out the Colombian president with a framed copy of an antique map and says, “This map is not known to anyone.” He believes he knows where a Spanish galleon that sunk after a pitched naval fight in 1708 lies, with billions in gold and silver coins in its hull. This is the true-life story of marine archaeologist Roger Dooley‘s search for the wreck, a tale that wrestles with the morality of treasure hunting, the rogues that aim to excavate it and the battle over ownership. This 384-page tome builds on a 2022 Vanity Fair feature “What Lies Beneath” by the author, now a Hollywood Reporter editor. — Erik Hayden

Perhaps the most impressive new drinks destination in town is in Melrose Hill, near the Paramount lot. Head bartender Kayla Garcia (pictured) is turning out a martini with saline and white kelp, as well as a boulevardier infused with oolong tea. Chef-owner Brian Baik, who spent time back east at Eleven Madison Park, will soon open a tasting menu restaurant next door. Here, he offers snacks like Wagyu beef hotdogs and a memorable shrimp cocktail boasting colossal crustaceans and a house-made sauce. — Gary Baum

CASE: Penguin Random House vs. Donald Sutherland estate.

WHY IT MATTERS: Sutherland’s memoir reflecting on his life and career is being held up by his estate. In a lawsuit filed in New York federal court on Oct. 30, Penguin Random House details a dispute with McNichol Pictures in which the company failed to deliver a manuscript of Made Up, But Still True because the estate of the late actor didn’t approve the draft. The publishing house seeks the return of a $400,000 advance. Before Sutherland’s passing last year, a draft of the memoir had been submitted, with Crown announcing a release in November. But after Sutherland’s death, Crown was told that Sutherland’s estate had undisclosed issues with the book, according to the complaint. Under the deal, Penguin Random House paid an advance against royalties totaling $1.25 million, including a $400,000 payment upon signing. The lawsuit accuses McNichol of refusing to return the money. — Winston Cho
