The Everett Silvertips added some experience to their goaltending tandem on Oct. 13, acquiring Anders Miller from the Calgary Hitmen in exchange for a 2027 third-round pick as well as a 2029 fifth-round pick that originally belonged to Lethbridge.
The 19-year-old Miller will come in as the backup for Raiden LeGall, who has a .929 save percentage and 1.85 goals-against average to go with a 7-0-1-0 record to start the season.
After posting a .909 save percentage and 2.34 GAA in 22 games last year, Miller has an .880 save percentage and 3.82 GAA in four appearances so far this season, with his final outing with Calgary — allowing six goals on 26 shots against Medicine Hat on Oct. 4 — ballooning his numbers in the early going of the season.
The Anchorage native bounced back in his Silvertips debut on Saturday by making 35 saves in a 3-2 win against Kelowna.
“(Miller) has regular season and playoff games at our level under his belt,” Silvertips general manager Mike Fraser said after the trade via press release. “This trade gives us an experienced goalie tandem for the rest of the season. We’re excited to add him to our group.”
Everett started the season with rookie Finn Werner behind LeGall, but decided to pivot to a more experienced option after the 17-year-old Werner debuted with 12 saves on 16 shots faced (.750 save percentage) in Everett’s 9-4 win against Victoria on Oct. 4.
The goals were not entirely Werner’s fault, as coach Steve Hamilton acknowledged after the game, but clearly the Silvertips felt the need to acquire more proven depth at the position. Everett reassigned Werner to his affiliate club after the trade.
“There was a couple of odd-man rushes I didn’t care for,” Hamilton said after the win against Victoria on Oct. 4. “That’s not what you want to see your young goalie face.”
The Silvertips return to Angel of the Winds Arena on Oct. 24 to host Saskatoon following a five-game road trip.
