A Genre-Spanning Collective Opens the Grammys With a Joyful Rendition of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Shining Star”

Israel Houghton, Lila Iké, Grace Potter, Maggie Rose, and Trombone Shorty came together for a vibrant, soul-filled tribute to a funk classic.

The 2026 Grammy Awards opened with a spirit of joy and unity as Israel Houghton, Lila Iké, Grace Potter, Maggie Rose and Trombone Shorty joined forces for a genre-blending performance of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Shining Star.” The collaborative opener immediately established a celebratory mood, honoring one of funk’s most enduring anthems.

Each performer brought their own musical lineage to the stage: Houghton’s gospel-rooted vocals grounded the performance, Lila Iké added a smooth reggae-inflected warmth, Potter’s rock-forward power cut through the arrangement, and Rose’s country-soul tone gave the song a fresh dimension. Anchoring it all was Trombone Shorty, whose brassy flourishes injected New Orleans energy and irresistible momentum.

The arrangement stayed true to the original’s infectious groove while allowing space for each artist to shine, turning the performance into a shared spotlight rather than a singular showcase. The result was a lively, feel-good opener that celebrated musical collaboration and cross-genre influence.

Jahnavi Harrison Brings Kirtan Tradition to the Grammys Red Carpet With First-Ever Nomination

Nominated for Best New Age, Ambient, or Chant Album, the artist says she’s honored to share the spiritual practice of kirtan on music’s biggest stage.

First-time Grammy nominee Jahnavi Harrison walked the red carpet celebrating her nomination for Into the Forest, emphasizing the importance of sharing her kirtan tradition with a global audience.

Speaking on the carpet, Harrison shared that being recognized by the Recording Academy is not only a personal honor, but also an opportunity to bring greater awareness to kirtan, the call-and-response chanting tradition central to her music.
