I probably shouldn't have seen the film before I read the book. Jodie Foster and Sir Anthony Hopkins were superb as Clarice and Dr. Lector and it must have spoiled me for the book. At least the film followed the book without major changes in the story, which is unusual.
Don't get me wrong..............this is an interesting and chilling story about a very deranged serial killer who seeks heavy set women as his victims. He has a reason for his choices which I won't mention here since it would be a spoiler but it is pretty gruesome. Dr. Hannibal Lector, a brilliant but insane psychiatrist who is held in a mental institution is called upon by Clarice, a freshman FBI agent, in an attempt to get some clues about this killer. His interactions with her are one of the highlights of the story.
It is well worth reading but I would recommend that you don't see the film before you take up the book.

Great review Jill. I saw the film. Sir Anthony will always be "Hannibal". I dont think I will be reading the book any time soon. I have way to many books in process now.

Jill, a great review. Since I have seen the movie, I will call it a day! I can only take so much of the horror!
The film was outstanding, but then again Anthony Hopkins is one of those actors who can make any movie great. As for the book, I haven't read it yet, but based on what you said about the movie pretty much following the book, I really need to look this one up this year. Great review, Jill.
A truly "Can't put it down" book. Read this in one sitting. I did see the movie which I also don't like to do before reading a book. You nailed this Jill.
Jill: what I've read of Harris is BLACK SUNDAY. I will say the novel is superior to John Frankenheimer's film, though that is not saying much. How easy it is to make fiction out of the actions of crazies!
