it was ok
bookshelves: female, family, glbt, action, romance, stem-nature, series

Knowing that this is part of a series makes me reconsider a two-star rating but as a standalone book, I thought it was okay. The provocative opening of the story, sharing Tally's unique living situation along with her best friend was intense enough but I think McCarry is sharing something more deeply and more important but because of the writing, felt a little pompous or over-exaggerated.

It's a journey for Tally, to understand her family and herself, but the fact that everything is so catastrophic, however realistic in a teenagers mind, felt more "Dawon's Creek" and John Green-esque in that these characters are not "real", they talk, act, and are in situations that are not representative of a common teen, at least in my opinion. And when the exploration turned into crazy drama within their family unit and with Shane, I lost interest and skimmed to the end.

A little too self-important to be believable though the intensely beautiful cover and (possibly the first two in the series?) will interest fans of McCarry's already.
