Unpopular opinion time:

The blurb of this book says The sheriff’s son, Kellan Turner, is not the golden boy everyone thinks he is, and Romy Grey knows that for a fact.
The thing is....we never meet Kellan Turner in this book.

The book starts after Kellan Turner rapes Romy. (That is not a spoiler)

This is the after effects of Romy's story. It begins with her using her nail polish and lipstick as armor against the hate from the small town that she lives throws at her. She accused the sheriff's precious son of rape. *gasp*
Nothing happens to him at all.

She is shunned at school so she builds up walls around herself. Never telling anyone what happened. Never talking about anything. Her mom tries to help but Romy has shut everyone out.

The Bad:
The story jumps from NOW until TWO WEEKS LATER, but didn't really keep the storyline straight for me. I was confused with what was happening most of the time. I kept thinking things would clear up later in the book but for me it never really did.

The main character Romy. I didn't care for her. I just didn't get enough of a sense of her personality that I never formed an attachment to her. I should have. In a book of this type you SHOULD rage for that girl. Every-time she would have something bad happen it seemed like she just made things worse for herself. Then she would never explain anything to anyone so it just became one big cluster fuck. I know that she had been traumatized and wasn't thinking straight but it was just too much for me.

She has somewhat of a love interest in the book. I don't think it added to the story at all. It actually took away from it. She was so traumatized that a boy should not have entered into the picture yet.

I wanted to feel more for these characters. This book has bullying even of her mom's boyfriend who is disabled due to a car accident. The townspeople openly mock him for being lazy. Then the whole thing with Romy should have had me furious. It just didn't.
There is girl on girl hate........

and through it all I just kept waiting on the story to really start.

Now for the good:
The book does have a powerful message and the writing is good. I love Courtney Summers so don't go thinking I'm hating on her. I'm not.

The story line of a girl being shunned for accusing a popular boy of rape. This happens. The stories need told.
Stick up for your women/girl sisters people! Even you guys.

Vanessa J. Great review! Too bad this didn't work for you :/ But I'm still intrigued about this book! :)

Melissa Baez Great review. I think these books are meant to move to into action or at least open our eyes when we see these things but when it fails to do that...meh. No point to it.

I think it should generate those feelings for the characters so that you feel something. This one was a fizzle.

So do I. I read one of her others and loved it.

Alejandro It seems that the rage was wasted of having read the book :P

Bummer! I hope your next reading would be better!

Good work on the review, Shelby!

Nenia Campbell You know, the moment I heard about this book, I thought, "It sounds an awful lot like Are You in the House Alone? by Richard Peck "

Except in ARE YOU IN THE HOUSE ALONE? you actually meet the popular boy.

Thanks for mentioning that tidbit, Shelby. I think I would have been disappointed if I had read this book not knowing that. The summary makes you think he will play an integral role in the plot as chief antagonist or something.

From the blurb I got that impression too. His brother is in it but never him.

Eilonwy Great honest review, Shelby.

I think I need to attach that last GIF to everything I do online forever.

I read SOME BOYS! I actually didn't like it very much, though. I loved the idea behind it but the execution overall failed for me.

Two of the best books about the aftermath of rape that I ever read were:
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

and
Just Listen by Sarah Dessen

JUST LISTEN is actually a lot like SPEAK (suspiciously so) except with romance and music thrown it. But it was good.

I hear

Rape Girl by Alina Klein

is supposed to be pretty good too, but I haven't read it.

Paige Bookdragon @Nenia: *gasp* Never thought that JUST LISTEN talks about rape..Whoa *sits quietly for awhile*

Anyhoo. Too bad you didn't like Some boys. To each its own, I guess. :D
The plot of these books may be dark and foreboding, but I love reading these kind of books. Thanks for the book recs!

message 23: by Nenia (new)

Nenia Campbell Haha yeah! It does. :)

You're very welcome, Paige! Rape is one of those things that appears often in books, but often in ways that don't have a lot of context. I like seeing the topic show up more and more frequently in contemporary YA as it really is important for teens to understand.

If you're interested, there's also a work of nonfiction that came out about two years ago that talks about some of the stereotypes about rape and rape victims, and society's attitudes towards it. Several women share their stories about being raped and dealing with the aftermath and it can be brutal.

Rape is Rape How Denial, Distortion, and Victim Blaming are Fueling a Hidden Acquaintance Rape Crisis by Jody Raphael

Yeah. I saw my friend using this book to her thesis thingamabob. I think this is the time to borrow it :D
Would it be okay if I snoop around your bookshelves? I love looking at other people's favorite books :D

Kelli I really just wanted to put a link to your review! You said it first & said it best. I think we and maybe 3 others didn't like the book.

We will start a club. :)

Jennifer This is exactly how I felt about the book! I've heard so many great things about, but I had a real problem with keeping the timeline straight and with understanding Romy's actions throughout the book. Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone in this!

You can join the club too! LOL
It's not horrible but it's not the best thing I ever read.

Kelli I got a note on my review saying the plot summary is irrelevant & not to base a book on what you think it will be but that's how I decide if I want to read a book & it is just odd to have a summary that is so inaccurate IMO.

I'm surprised I haven't gotten trolled about my opinion on it yet. I say so many bad words they might just not want cussed.

Kelli Effin ay!!

Jessica This is perfect! This is basically the same reaction I had to this book. I saw so many 5 star reviews and I was kind of thinking I must have missed something.

Kristen I completely agree with you! I was expecting to love All The Rage, considering I liked the author's other books, the blurb sounded interesting, and it was on my 'to-read' list since last summer, but ultimately I was disappointed in the book. I thought about writing my own review, but yours just about sums up my opinions haha

Melissa I'm actually still reading it, but I'm still waiting for it to grab me. I thought Kellan would at least make an appearance!

message 43: by Miz (new) - rated it 3 stars

Miz Agree ...

Noina It's not Two weeks later, it's Two weeks earlier !

1. She gets raped at a party.
A year passes by.
The story picks up two weeks before the Wake Up Party.
2. She goes to the Wake Up Party and gets attacked.

I also had trouble understanding it, until I re-read the beginning and the parts written in grey from an exterior POV - these are a retelling of her rape that happened one year ago !

Steph I have to COMPLETELY agree

message 46: by Roxy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Roxy Carl Thank you, I felt like I was taking crazy pills. I had a difficult time following as well and so much seemed nonsensical. For a book called all the rage, I didn't see much and the only thing that was popular was everyone except Leon and people from not her small town, hating, blaming and thinking the worst of her always.

I can't say how every rape victim would react. Though. I just didn't see much sense or point in this book

message 47: by Faye (new) - rated it 2 stars

Faye Fab review, completely agree!

Miss Mara Why was the first chapter repeated at the end? I was so confused

message 49: by Megan (new)

Megan Honestly I just found it so boring that I got halfway through and stopped reading it. None of the characters in this book are likeable, Romy has literally no personality whatsoever and everyone at her school is just mean to her for no reason at all. Maybe I just don't get it because the school is set in America and I live in England but seriously, how bored would you have to be to just make fun of a girl for getting drunk? This book just sucks

Hannah Rush Thank you! I just finished it and completely agree!
