***REVIEW ORIGINALLY POSTED ON WWW.WHATISMUCH.COM***
It took me a while, after finishing All The Rage by Courtney Summers, to formulate my thoughts about the book into something actually, you know. Coherent. So please forgive the delay between reviews, but this book wasn’t one that I could just arbitrarily write about without putting some serious thought into it. This book deserves more than that.
All The Rage was published a month ago, and I was so glad when that day finally came. I’d been looking forward to reading this book for a while, thanks to my friends on Goodreads. And it was so so so worth it. It was worth every wince, every lump in my throat, every REAL and DIFFICULT emotion it brought out in me.
The book follows Romy, a high schooler in a relatively small town. Everyone’s labeled her as a liar, because of her accusations against the sheriff’s son, but Romy knows the truth. And in the end, she has to decide whether to speak up, because if she doesn’t, who knows what the cost of her silence might be?
Courtney Summers’s writing style is amazing, to say the least, and it evokes so much emotion, as I mentioned, that I had to put the book down for something lighter and fluffier at quite a few points. I couldn’t deal.
But then I realized… Romy’s reality, while technically just words on some pages, is an ACTUAL reality for so many girls in our society. These girls are branded as liars, bullied endlessly, belittled into silence, and worse, even though they have every right to speak up against the horrible acts that have been committed against them! It’s such a disgrace, really, and after reading All The Rage, I feel like I can never go back to my former way of thinking, which was (unfortunately) something along the lines of, “It hasn’t happened to me, nor to anyone I know, so it doesn’t really matter to me.”
And for my former way of thinking, I sincerely apologize.
Please, please read All The Rage. It doesn’t matter who you are. This is an important book. I can’t stress that enough. Please just give it a chance.
