Short-Soundtrack:
Marshall Crutcher – Main Theme
Coil – Red Queen
Ruelle – Everything Is Lost

Genre: retelling, YA
Stuff: real world mixed up with netherlings
Fail: humans, school, Jeb, Jeb...Jeb.
WOW: Morpheus, still and always
POV: 1st-person, female
Love-Geometry: medium going to hard

Quote-Core:
“You are part human, and an artist. Creation is your power.”

If you’re not going to Wonderland, Wonderland is coming to you.

Yes, in this part of the trilogy we will suffer in human realm. Why suffer? You know, it’s like mixing up exquisite dish with something humble, or coffee and tea in one cup. Not tasty, not to say disgusting. People in here are boring, Alyssa’s family, Jeb (especially Jeb), her school (I’m so tired of reading about school-days, that’s why I dislike realistic ya-contemp). What looks normal among madness stuff, looks ridiculous among common things.

The only bright spot in this mess was Morpheus, okay Rabid and Chessie as well (they are sooo cute, I can’t even). I found myself skipping passages without nethelings and hating Jeb more and more, I wanted smack Alyssa too. Double standards! Finally, she got that she uses double standards: Jeb is always her knight and hero, Morpheus – cunning bastard (well, he is, but it's not that he can't be a knight at the same time).

I see why Morpheus is so fond of Alyssa. But I don’t know why Jeb is. I mean, SO fond? They are young and they have lives ahead. He’s stupid enough to believe that he’ll spent his entire life with a girl? This one particular girl? And if you think that Jeb became less possessive, you're wrong. Hands off, she’s mine, don’t look at her and suchlike things are here. Alyssa learns from him ‘cause she, too, starts to repeat MINE. I wanna kill them both.

The plot was complex once again but not enough. And all these prom balls… I’m fed up. So why 4 (out of 10) stars and not 1? Morpheus, of course. His sexy humor, the way he acts and talks, the way he looks. You can’t help your fall for him.

Look what he is doing here:
“Fair warning, I intend to make good use of that time. I will be gentle, but I will not be a gentleman. You will be the center of my world. I’ll show you the wonders of Wonderland, and when you’re drunk on the beauty and chaos that your heart so yearns to know, I will take you under my wings and make you forget the human realm ever existed. You’ll never want to leave Wonderland or me again.”

“Of all the times you’ve undressed me in my fantasies, I never remember feeling this … unfulfilled.” “Please, Morpheus,” I beg upon hearing Jeb stir in the background. “Ah, but those delectable words,” Morpheus says with a provocative smirk, “those are always in the fantasy.” I glare at him. “You’re unbelievable.” “And that sentiment is reserved for the end.” “Shut. Up.”

Such a shame the book is not about him only.

The next part of this series will bring us to AnyElsewhere, looking-glass world, so I think something interesting still has chance to happen .

I have some feelings about the ending, I hope where wouldn’t be TID’s final, though I guess this is exactly what’s going to be.

PS: Natalia, you were right, Morpheus’s masquerade costume is a thing xDDD

PPS: This is Leigh (not Bardugo though) from Amour Sucre, he reminds me about Morpheus a bit. Didn’t find the author of this pic, but have to thank him or her)

"Please, Morpheus," I beg upon hearing Jeb stir in the background.

"Ah, but those delectable words," Morpheus says with a provocative smirk, "those are always in the fantasy."

I glare at him. "You're unbelievable."

"And that sentiment is reserved for the end.”

“He puts it on, and his gaze locks to mine. His jewels flicker between passion and defiance—an evocative and intimidating combination. “Shh." I squeeze his hand. His palm feels clammy. "We have to keep it down, okay? We don't want my dad coming in."

He grits his teeth against more shivers. "Always knew I'd end up in your bed . . . and hear you say those words one day." He manages a smirk.

Jeb snarls. "Unbelievable. Even when he's at death's door he's a tool." He arranges a pillow beneath Morpheus's neck. "Why don't you keep your mouth shut while we help you."

Morpheus laughs weakly, his skin flashing with blue light. "What say Alyssa"--his breath rattles--"give my mouth something else to do?”

“Hello, luv," he says through a thick curtain of blue hair. "Hope I'm...interrupting.”

“Nothing can break the chains you have on my heart. For you are Wonderland.”
A.G. Howard, Unhinged

A.G. Howard
“He pulls free before we make contact. “A moment, please. Allow me to bask in your devotion.” He’s referring to my ankle tattoo.
I blush. “I’ve told you a hundred times. It’s only a set of wings.”
“Nonsense.” Morpheus grins. “I know a moth when I see one.”
I groan in frustration, and he surrenders, letting me press our markings together. A spark rushes between them, expanding to a firestorm through my veins. His gaze locks on mine, and the bottomless depths flicker—like black clouds alive with lightning. For that instant, I’m bared to the bone. He looks inside my heart; I look inside his. And the similarities there terrify me.”
A.G. Howard, Unhinged

A.G. Howard
“Morpheus turns his face to the sky. “I’m afraid you’re the one who’s mistaken, if you think I’m going to let Wonderland fall to rot so you can play ‘pin the male on the virgin’ with your mortal toy.”
A.G. Howard, Unhinged

A.G. Howard
“Nothing about you or Wonderland makes sense. And the ‘one abiding truth’ is that life was so much easier when I’d forgotten your massive ego and that other world ever existed.”
A tremor shifts through his features, first fragile, then severe. His muscles twitch under his T-shirt, sending a tingling sensation through my knuckles. “You want me nonexistent?"

Before I can respond, he steps back and flips the hat from his head. Then he drags off his vest and his T-shirt, dropping them all on the floor at my feet. Once he’s peeled off his necklace and bracelets, he stands there facing me in only jeans and boots.

I watch him warily. “W-w-what are you doing?”

“I’m clearing the way for my massive ego.”
A.G. Howard, Unhinged

A.G. Howard
“Morpheus places his hand on Jeb's busy fingers, eyes opened to slits. "Ah, my pretty pseudo elf." He takes labored breath. "is it time at last to express our unrequited feelings?”
A.G. Howard, Unhinged

A.G. Howard
“Seeing me surrounded by paper towels on the floor, Morpheus lifts his eyebrows. "Building a nest?" he asks. "There's no need to start acting like a bird simply because you have a propensity for flying.”
A.G. Howard, Unhinged

A.G. Howard
“«He grins and straightens, wings high and regal behind him. I glare at his costume. It’s so typical him. A mix of medieval and rock star: brown leather forearm guards with studs over a ruffle-cuffed white shirt, and a cavalier doublet in burgundy with a gold lace overlay. The hem hits above his muscled thighs, so the skintight burgundy hose taper smoothly into knee-high brown boots, leaving nothing to the imagination. Worst of all, he has a crown.
He dressed as a fairy king. The irony doesn’t escape me.
I scowl.
“Problem, luv?” He looks down on me from behind a gold lace half mask while adjusting the ruby-jeweled crown over his blue hair with velvet-clad hands. Tiny moth corpses are suspended in the rubies, like stained-glass fossils.
I shake my head. “I’m pretty sure you’ll be the only one wearing anything tight enough to need a codpiece. Always have to be the showstopper, don’t you?”

“Oh, I assure you, what I chose to show is only the start.»”

I see no triangle here. I see one super couple and one annoying stupid boy. I wanna kill him. Really. This character can make you savage. But Morpheus... I live from moments with him to another moments with him.

This stage called - denial. You are going through stages of acceptance that this book has a love triangle and a bad one. A few more stages and you'll see what I mean xDD

Katerina Kondrenko Ahaha, I see how stupid Alyssa is as well. No, I can see her reasons and two-side-coin's nature but she has to stop loving Jeb and to start loving Morpheus. This is the worst part, she chose not a right guy. I allow Morpheus to kill Alyssa and Jeb. They deserve it.

Diane The picture you posted is beautiful!

Yeah, like a dark prince)

message 7: by Nastassja (new)

Nastassja Yep, the pic is great - very unearthly looking dark prince and the quotes are hot, it seems there's no phrase from Morpheus without sexiness it it, hmmm sexy boy))

Aaaaah, Alice: Madness Returns - I played the game! Looove the sound)))

Coil - Red Queen gave me creeps, especially in the beginning with these... crickets? or whatever it was it gave me major goosebumps)

P.S. I can help you dispose of Jeb if you want. We can dumb his body together where no one will search for him, but first we will desecrate his body and dance on his grave later. Say yes, Kat, I am in a serial killer mood today xDDD

I'm yours for this trip! We can kill Alyssa too, no girl would say no to Morpheus and stay alive.

Yes, we can do the same with Alyssa and Morpheus will be yours for the taking)) it is really sad that he couldn't find a normal girl in all his years, but we can surely fix it;)

Natalia You guys are cracking me up. That was me and my other friends last year, before Ensnared came out. Out on a warpath against Jeb, plotting to lock him up in a cellar and keep him there until the end of the book.

And I don't know how ANYONE can say no to Morpheus. It's just beyond my grasp.

P.S. Kat, I'm glad you liked his costume. ;)

BTW, I didn't know the word "codpiece", I googled it then laughing hysterically. Morpheus indeed the plot, I wanted to give the book 2 stars, but I remembered all these moments with him and I have to admit that Howard has a good imagination... so... tell me there would be enough of Morpheus in the next book?!)

Natalia Katerina wrote: "so... tell me there would be enough of Morpheus in the next book?!) "

There will be enough Morpheus in the next book. Here, I said it :P

Although you know, there is no such thing as enough Morpheus. No matter how much you get, you'll always want more of him. LOL

It will take Alyssa a while to reach AnyElsewhere, though, there is some daughter-dad chapters in the beginning, and Red's memories. Do not skip Red's chapters!

Katerina Kondrenko Okay) I will be patient! Now I'm reading your review and it's brilliant!)

message 15: by Natalia (last edited Nov 14, 2015 07:48AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Natalia Thanks)) I just went to reread it. I was still a bit angry and bitter after R&R and Alina's pathetic case, and it shows, doesn't it? Didn't want Alyssa to end up like Alina. I wanted her to end up like Meghan Chase from the Iron Fey. And all my fears and frustration and uncertainty showed up in my review.
Did you read Iron Fey, BTW? It was one of my first YA series, and I loved it.

Katerina Kondrenko Natalia wrote: "Thanks)) I just went to reread it. I was still a bit angry and bitter after R&R and Alina's pathetic case, and it shows, doesn't it? Didn't want Alyssa to end up like Alina. I wanted her to end up ..."

Not yet) But wanna do it. Wasn't a fan of fairies before ACOTAR) And there is a prince, aye?)

message 17: by Natalia (last edited Nov 14, 2015 11:19AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Natalia Yes, prince Ash ;) There was a time when he was #2 on my list of book boyfriends. Iron Fey was my second series about Fae and made me fall in love with the lore (the first was Wicked Lovely, but I dropped that one after book 3, because the ships were all wrong, imo.)

I ship couples because of their chemistry. If I don't see the sparks and electricity, no amount of reasons is going to make me a believer. I live for wicked games of seduction. LOL)) You know what I mean. "Friends in love" trope just doesn't do it for me. Neither do "nice guys". They rarely have anything to offer except their "nicety".

Katerina Kondrenko Same here. And if the ship sails to the other lands... it's truly tragic. I never planed what fiction guys I would like, I have no prejudices against good guys or bad boys. It just happened. I adore witty and sexy dialogues, I even do like smirks xDDD Sometimes I can be pleased with a plot and close my eyes on stupid paring, but more often I NEED my kind of ship in the book, let it be subtle but it should be there.

BTW, prince Ash... wow, what a name!) Sexy one.

Natalie I don't get what she sees in Jeb. Really.

Katerina Kondrenko Natalie wrote: "I don't get what she sees in Jeb. Really."

Same here. He's something she got used to, but everything looks differently in comparison to something else. Morpheus is way more interesting.
