HIDEOUS COVER ALERT*!
I refuse to blame Andrews for this ridonkulous looking cheese-fest, but I wish that whoever is in charge of this sort of thing at Avon would get a clue.
This looks like the sort of thing I've come to expect from crappy PNR, not Urban Fantasy. This cover doesn't say kick-ass story between these pages, it says Fabioish romance inside.
Well, guess what?
They don't have sex in this book.
The folks who were hoping for a little *bow-chicka-wow-wow* (thanks to the cover) will be disappointed.
And the people who don't want mindless PNR (not that there's anything wrong with that!) are going to bypass this book altogether.
Even I put off reading it, and I'm a fan of Ilona Andrews...so I should know better.
That's the power of a BAD cover, people!
Alrighty, enough bitching.
I picked up Burn For Me and gobbled it down in record time.
I loved Nevada and her entire wacky family. Especially Grandma!
Surprisingly, I loved Mad Rogan, too. I see some complaints about him, but I thought he was awesome. Sure, it seems like he's sort of a sociopath, but I have a feeling he's a bit more complicated than that.
Or maybe not.
Either way, I thought he was great!
Magic (thanks to a scientific breakthrough) is now a hereditary quality that the more powerful magic users in the world view as a commodity. They marry for the power it brings their families, and those Houses rule cities and corporations.
Or something like that.
The world-building wasn't fully explored, but I'm hoping that we'll get a better glimpse of how everything works in the next book. There was definitely enough information to get to get started with, though.
I'm feeling really lazy, and I want to go eat some soupand pie.
So instead of trying to review the plot, I'll just say that if you're a fan of Ilona Andrews stuff, you're going to like this.
Highly Recommended to fans of Kate Daniels, Mercy Thompson, etc..
*No points were deducted for the horrible cover...

HIDEOUS COVER ALERT*!This is the most ridiculous book cover in the history of book covers. This is the cover the Andrews had chosen for this book:

Apparently one of the major retailers rejected it so they went for the crappy one instead. IA talked about it on her blog.
Looks like you loved the book just as much as I did Anne! Great review:)
Andrews definitely had the better cover picked out! Who was the retailer? They need to be fired! And, YES! I loved it!!!!

Anne wrote: "Andrews definitely had the better cover picked out! Who was the retailer? They need to be fired! And, YES! I loved it!!!!"Actually there were at least three of them: BN, Walmart & Target.
I love the first cover better too :(But if it helps, it's being marketed as PNR not UF. It's a 3 book series that is like PNR series, but not like typical PNR where each book is a closed HEA.
Whoa! How can they market a book with no sex as PNR? I saw several reviews complaining about the lack of sex, and now it makes sense. I don't blame team Andrews. This was just bad promotion. It's still a great book, though. Can't wait for the next one!
Anne wrote: "Oh. Wait. Like a PNR trilogy? Ok, ok. Took me a second to get what you were saying, Laura! LOL"LOL yeah, that's a better way to put it-a PNR trilogy. So I think it's sort of both a UF and a PNR, but Avon is marketing it as PNR. And I'm sure there will be sexy times ;P
I'm hoping for sexy times, but I still like more UF in my story...which this has! Rogan is definitely the kind of leading man I enjoy! Plus, the slow burn is my favorite.

Hey this is only going to be a trilogy? That sucks, I thought there would be more instalments than that:(
I'm ok with a trilogy...think about Mac and Barrons, Sarah! It's better to end it, than drag it out!

did you see that the next Fever book is back to Mac? I was kind of surprised to see that with all the going on about Dani that KMM did on facebook after Iced came out.
Laura the Highland Hussy wrote: "did you see that the next Fever book is back to Mac? I was kind of surprised to see that with all the going on about Dani that KMM did on facebook after Iced came out."Yes, I've been all aflutter! Although, I wasn't a fan of Iced, so...
I'm very much willing to give it a chance, though.
What happened on FB when Iced came out? I always miss the good stuff!
KMM was shocked people took Ryo and Christian in the pedo way. She was very much, they see the woman she'll become, they aren't creepers, etc. BUT she also both before AND after Iced, made a humongous deal about how Dani was her favorite character, she loved Dani, and she was going to tell the story from Dani's POV no matter what. Then after all the backlash from fans about how much Ryo was a pedo, and how a lot of people don't like Dani as the main character, suddenly the plan of 3 Dani books and 2 Mac/Barrons books is now (I believe, don't quote me on this) going to be 3 or 4 books where the next ones are Mac/Barrons with some small Dani parts.ETA:
You should scroll through her fb page-she keeps us pretty up to date on it
Ooooooh! Ok, will do. I'm all for an author having the right to do whatever they want with their books and their characters. I just think the smart ones realize that their fans are reallyreallyreally important. If you have a Team Edward/Team Jacob thing, then do whatever you originally planned. But if it's something along the lines of what happened with the Sookie series, and the fans are ALL rooting for a guy, and the author 'envisioned' a different ending? Or in this case, when KMM picked a character/situation that she loved, and that (a lot of) the fans hated. She can do what she wants, but she'll lose a lot of readers, and I think she knows that. I definitely don't think it's stupid for her to change her plans.
I think it's smart to keep Mac and Barrons in the mix, and I definitely don't like being in dani's head for a whole book, but I really was surprised at how she changed her plan. She plots out far in advance, so I wonder if this change is what set her release schedule back. It would be really interesting to read her first draft.

As you say she plots out her books very far in advance and this goes way beyond a major re-write. It's like writing a new book altogether.
I think it's smart of her to rethink her plan, especially if it wasn't working. Only an idiot keeps stubbornly going with a losing game plan.

That's exactly why the Andrews decided on a major KD #8 re-write. I don't mind if they are late releasing the book. I'd rather wait a few more months than read a crappy instalment in the series.

Apparently they weren't happy with what they were writing. Ilona wrote about it on their blog: http://www.ilona-andrews.com/blog/201...
I agree-which is why I was always ok with the one-a-year release schedules from authors like KMM and Patricia Briggs. Sadly, though, I'm not sure how I'm liking KMM's new direction. I'll have to finish Iced (I actually never finished it since I didn't like dani's voice so much).

Amen, Sarah!I'm re-reading all of the Fever books right now, but I'm not going to include Iced, Laura. It doesn't even have the same feel to it, so I'm going to pretend it didn't happen. LOL!
oOSarahOo wrote: "My advice Laura: don't bother finishing Iced."It's taken me 2 years to even want to :/
For someone who loved everything else Moning wrote, that says a lot.
I just finished. I'm not reading Iced again, though. Now that I know about Moning's thing for Dani, I can see where she was inserted in to the Fever plot more than was necessary. :(
I guess I didn't mind the Dani Daily newsletter, but I skimmed it, and when we were in her head for parts during Shadowfever was it? I was definitely over her. I just don't like her voice. And for some people I think it's the fact she killed Alina, for me it's really just her, her personality, her voice. I don't like her, so I don't want to read a whole book devoted to her, let alone one like Iced, where it's in first person pov AND it's an intense, deep book. But I hate the main character, y'know?

I'm starting my Fever reread today but I'd rather die a horrible, painful death than read Iced again.
I agree. It wasn't just the storyline of Iced, it was Dani's voice. So annoying! But now that I've re-read all the Fever books, I did notice that KMM tends to be a bit..juvenile? All of the goofy acronyms for things weren't as cute once I realized that maybe it was the 'Dani' side of KMM's personality coming out.

THANK YOU! I forgot about that! *snort*I've got my fingers crossed that she doesn't try to channel her inner 10 year old for this next book.

Hey did you see the newest teaser? It's a pretty long excerpt and apart from the choppy style it made me feel a little better about the book.http://thefeverseries.com/
