He can use long sentences for dramatic effect, for example, when he was listing all of the studies that Elizabeth was thinking of when serving food to her picky-eater son, or when Jack goes down the rabbit hole of internet conspiracy theories with his father. Long sentences can communicate hysteria, overthinking, or obsessive thoughts. With this being literary fiction, and especially meta-modern contemporary literary fiction, the stylistic choices are meant to enhance character development rather than to propel a plot forward or to make some sort of larger philosophical point (though it does that, too). If the long sentences bother you, you might prefer to listen to this on audiobook, like I did. The narrator is excellent, and the emotion in his voice allows you to hear and feel the author's intent exceptionally well, without the distraction of seeing the long sentences.(less)
