Details taken from The Hollywood Reporter:

ReplyRuPaul’s Drag Race alum Utica Queen has officially joined the cast of Project Runway season 21. On the fashion show, Utica will go by Ethan Mundt, his real name, marking the first-ever crossover between the two beloved reality TV shows.
The new batch of designers include: two former Project Runway contestants, season 7’s Jesus Estrada and season 19’s Caycee Black; Alex Foxworth, Angelo Rosa, Antonio Estrada (Jesus’s twin), Belania Daley, Joan Madison, Joseph McRae, Madeline Malenfant, Veejay Floresca, and Yuchen Han.
Season 21 of Project Runway will premiere via Freeform on July 31, 2025, and will be available to stream on Hulu and Disney+.
Zendaya’s stylist (and Drag Race rotating judge) Law Roach will join the judge’s panel alongside Nina Garcia, with previously announced returning host Heidi Klum and mentor Christian Siriano. Season 21, too, sports a star-studded guest judge list, notably including fellow fashion reality TV staple Tyra Banks.
Additional guest judges include Real Housewives of New York’s Jenna Lyons, Nikki Glaser, Michael Kors, Sofia Vergara, and Joan Smalls, among others.

Things feel familiar, yet there are clear changes in direction, tone, and format. This isn’t your yesteryear Bravo or Lifetime “Project Runway.” Some interesting quirks, like the idea of “houses,” but an entire season of team challenges would be brutal (learn from “Drag Race”!), so hopefully that ends sooner rather than later. Not getting the elimination results until the start of the following episode is highly manipulative and better suited for a binge model. Bringing back Heidi Klum was a stroke of genius. Tim Gunn should have returned as well. No offense to Christian Siriano, who will always remain the show’s best and most profitable alum, but his mentoring leaves much to be desired. Judging panel is fine. Nina Garcia is always the gold standard, and the addition of Law Roach is everything, bitches! She’s giving it to the girls this season raw and unfiltered (I expect much was edited down and sugarcoated on her “Drag Race” critiques). It’s giving early-era Michael Kors in the best ways. Forever grateful that useless judges like Brandon Maxwell and Zac Posen are nowhere in sight. Now to the designers! Lively cast full of talent and outsized personalities. The twins might overtake the entire season (for as long as they stick around), but I’m personally enjoying both of their antics. We’re getting a few returning alums, though sadly one is gone already (she was eliminated first in her past season too . . . ouch). One likes to be branded as a tiresome one-name-only in all introductions (first name + last name fused together). Utica Queen (Ethan) is very much a major presence and won the first challenge of Disney princesses and villains. He made a vital mistake in the second challenge that cost his team victory. Next episode, Ethan and Jesús are creating their own houses, so the plot thickens! Hoping for the best for this season regardless. It’s also shorter than past seasons (10 episodes), but that’s the standard streaming environment nowadays. Welcome back!

Ethan/Utica (honestly I will probably die on this hill but they are my fav so far) and Joan are the front runners to me so far. i hate the twins. Law Roach…..is exactly like I remembered him from on ANTM. He likes hearing his own voice
ReplyAugust 1, 2025 at 5:31 pm #1206298794Well, that was better than I expected. Loved having Heidi back and Nina of course. LaRoach is good but harsh. I do like that the judges had differing opinions… As for the contestants, wow, so many annoying folks so far… I do like Utica/Ethan the best so far, but I guess that’s not saying much… Anywho, we will see as the weeks go on.
One big gripe though~ WHY DO THEY DO THE ELIMINATIONS ON THE FOLLOWING EPISODE? SO ANNOYING!

ReplyAugust 8, 2025 at 1:09 pm #1206301851I knew from the most minor amount of sleuthing that Alex was conspicuously absent from the sneak peek, so that was that, I guess. I think Alex had far more to show, or at least more than Caycee did, who was about at the same place aesthetically that she was the first time on the show. It’s still asinine to keep the elimination results secret until the following episode. Feels very manipulative to get viewers to return for upcoming episodes (the real ones will do so regardless). The team challenges are doing a disservice to individual design aesthetics, which is unfortunate when we’re trying to get to know each designer separately. Kinda happy that Jesús and Antonio are killing it so far. I’m sure TPTB will gun for them eventually, but they make for great television with their outsized personalities and can actually design well too. Jesús in particular was a strong leader with a sustained vision for his team’s “boring” fabric (wool) and the flower theme. Ethan’s team didn’t really have a theme, b/c “showstoppers” isn’t a theme lol. They were so happy getting denim, but something told me that it would be harder to make that modern and fashion-forward than wool. It was too bad that Joan felt so pressured into doing a design she didn’t approve of (she did design it, but it wasn’t her favorite). I was living for the appearance of Utica Queen, of course, but I’m surprised that the judges weren’t into it. Maybe any sort of publicity for another reality-competition series is off limits, but it’s not like “Drag Race” is in this particular lane much at all. Jesús’s team definitely won, and Belania’s fierce look was the main standout that deserved to win. I’m curious what event Sofia Vergara wore this outfit to and what alterations were needed for her body type. Guess I have to predict who’s going home next episode. :-/ The judges said that Joan’s look was the least bad of the three, so between team leader Ethan (one of the stars of the season) and ho-hum Angelo (with two consecutive bottom placements), I’m going with the latter. We’re getting an “Abbott Elementary”-theme challenge next week with the dreaded unconventional materials challenge. Dun, dun, dun!

Beyond manipulative to leave it up to the designers to eliminate someone, and of course, not showing us the results this episode and plastering a lame-ass “TO BE CONTINUED” at the end. Ugh. They’re really gunning for the twins in a way that doesn’t feel earned and especially contrived. Hate that the bros are so close and helping each other out? Well, work even harder and design better shit to combat their efforts. If the show doesn’t disqualify designers for working together in individual challenges, then they’re doing nothing wrong and others can do the same damn thing. Antonio’s design is only there b/c of Law Roach’s odd styling critiques. To have him in the bottom over lost Madeline feels very silly, even in a “blind” runway (which I don’t entirely believe). Yuchen winning was also bizarre. I think Ethan’s design met the moment the best, or even Veejay’s stunning shuttlecock design that took my breath away. Between Joan and JosephMcRae, I think it’s probably Joan’s time with two consecutive bottom placements. Will the designers feel the same way? Were the judges out on vacation this week? Budget cuts from bargain-basement Freeform? Who’s to say at this point. This is why a judging team is required.
My top three: Ethan, Veejay, & Jesús
Safe: Antonio, Yuchen, & JosephMcRae
Bottom three: Madeline, Joan, & BelaniaFine with Angelo going home. It was his time with his consecutive bottom placements, and he was never given the screentime to properly pop with his very low-key (re: straight) personality in a sea of extroverts. I’d imagine he would have won a menswear challenge outright, but that isn’t what this show’s normally about. Love to see a true menswear challenge though with a crop of new models (and not sample sizes, but real men) to again throw the designers for a loop. Always love any “Abbott Elementary” tie-ins, and Chris Perfetti and Lisa Ann Walter didn’t disappoint on that front. Waiting a whole week for the results infuriates me! This season should have been a same-day binge release instead.

I HATE these cliffhangersAugust 19, 2025 at 5:48 pm #1206307754Late to this party, but I’m having fun with the return of this show! I had gotten so frustrated with the previous all-star season that I stopped watching in the middle of the finale. This edition feels more fun, and getting Heidi back was the best production decision the show could have made. Heidi, Nina and Law Roach together are a great judging team, but Nina’s been MIA two challenges running, and this week Heidi disappeared, too, taking the runway with her.
The twins are fun, and I enjoy the drama surrounding how annoyed some of the designers are by them, but I don’t think I’ve cared for anything Antonio has made. This week’s look was probably my favorite of his so far, but it wasn’t great. Of the bottom three who Law picked, I was least surprised by Antonio being there. But I have to say that Veejay convinced me that JosephMcCrae kind of deserves the boot. I wouldn’t have thought Yuchen’s look would win, but I’m happy it did, mostly because I just love Yuchen so much. His looks have been a little samey, so I hope he gets to branch out more next week.
Making the other designers decided who gets eliminated feels quite cruel, but I guess it’s maybe better than just having the one judge who made it this week making that decision solo.

We both know you would live for this if you were on the show. Practice for Survivor
