Maud Foster Windmill - Boston
Maud Foster Windmill is a seven-storey, five sail windmill located in the Lincolnshire town of Boston. The building is perfectly designed to draw on the good supply of Lincolnshire wind, the five patent sails can make milling possible on most days.
She was built for Thomas and Isaac Reckitt in 1819 by the Hull millwrights Norman and Smithson. Alongside is a granary, there also used to be a steam powered bone mill. Having changed owners many times Maud Foster was preserved in the 1950s. Nowadays she is a successful commercial venture and is fully accessible. Inside is mostly original machinery, iron has been used for the main shaft and cogs.
On the ground floor there is a hurst frame and various flour mixers and grain machines. Throughout there are the usual technologies including a governor, two Derbyshire millgrits, one French Burr and friction sack hoist.
