Richard Herring’s written on his Substack that he’s recorded a RHLSTP episode with Doug, for release in the New Year.

I then met Red Dwarf co-creator Doug Naylor for the first time and discussed his career and his new kids book “Sinbin Island”. What a lovely man he is and I am very impressed that he managed to get a sci fi sitcom off the ground (despite everyone always claiming that those won’t work) and proved it would work and made one of the most successful UK comedies of all time. Nerds who like sci fi and comedy really want a great sci fi comedy. It absolutely works as long as its done by people who understand both. And I speak as someone whose sci fi sitcom never got beyond a taster tape!

Doug lost a leg in a traffic accident as a 7 year old, which I did not know until I researched his life, and got a letter from no-legged flying ace Douglas Bader which is both amazing and beautiful and also hilarious in the way that he described the situation (listen to the podcast next year to find out).

So that should be fun. I went to see a RHLSTP live at the Crucible earlier this year, with Bernie Clifton as guest, as part of the Crossed Wires festival. A very enjoyable evening.

“So I was hanging out with the cool kids over at Ganymede & Titan…”

I only saw one RHLSTP live, back in 2012 when I used to live in London. It was Armando Iannucci and Graham Linehan together, before all the unfortunate transphobia business had reared its head.

I was at that one too! My only other one was Peter Baynham two years ago.

If only we’d have known what was to come, we could have changed history. Like going back in time to murder Hitler as a baby.

I’ve fallen about four/five years behind but I guess I can skip ahead once in a while.

I’ve fallen about four/five years behind but I guess I can skip ahead once in a while.

I dropped off in 2018/19. I used to follow all his stuff (apart from self-playing snooker and before he got into stone clearing and whatever else), but tried catching up on one of the stand-up shows I’d missed and got too irrationally annoyed by his vocal delivery to continue. Following every day of his blogged life for 15+ years and hearing his voice every week then taking a break has parasocially confused my brain, I must know him more intimately than I do almost anyone. So I think it’s probably my fault (unless he is just annoying).

I could’ve almost written this word-for-word. I read his Warming Up blog avidly for years (though not for a long time now) and have never listened to the stone-clearing. Was obsessed with AIOTM (aiotm) back when that was a thing, depressingly many years ago.

I’m not sure if I’ve ever actively listened to the snooker one, or just heard him describe it enough times that it feels like I have. Saw his latest stand-up earlier this year, first time in a good while, and it was gently amusing, but I too found his delivery to be an issue. Lacking in… smoothness? Just didn’t feel like it flowed very well, I don’t know if he’s changed or I have.

The one constant from the Herring-verse has been RHLSTP, it’s like a familiar, comfy blanket.

Yep, I don’t know whether that’s actually Peak Herring, but it was the one I was most excited about while it was Occurring. It felt like TMWRNJ again, but even more cult and ramshackle. There was a bit where he imagined a conversation with the bloke who motorcycled around the world with Ewan McGregor that transitioned into a motorcycle clothing shop sketch reprise that I somehow hadn’t seen coming and made me laugh uncontrollably in public, I had to wander off somewhere quiet.

I think AIOTM gave us the phrase ‘cock juggling thunder cunt’
