What Are Multivitamins for Men?

Multivitamins are specific combinations of vitamins and minerals that can be taken as either a capsule, liquid, powder or tablet. Typically, multivitamins contain about 26 different nutrients, and are designed to provide 100% of the Recommended Daily Allowance of the listed vitamins and minerals, according to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Because supplements are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as medications, interested individuals should look for a multivitamin that contains a United States Pharmacopeia (USP) seal of approval. This seal means that the ingredients and the amount of ingredients listed on the label of your multivitamin have been tested and are accurate.

What Ingredients Are in Multivitamins for Men?

Multivitamins for men contain key vitamins, minerals and nutrients specifically formulated with a man’s dietary needs in mind. They have all sorts of functions, explains Amanda Kostro Miller, a registered dietitian and licensed dietitian nutritionist of the herb and botanical medicine resource center The Botanical Institute, including, “nourishing the skin, regulating hormones, fighting inflammation and filling in various nutritional gaps.”

While it might seem like there are too many multivitamins on the market, Kostro Miller says this is a good thing since everyone has different nutritional needs. “When you compare all the different options, you’ll notice each multivitamin has different amounts of vitamins and minerals based on gender, age or lifestyle needs,” she says. “Different products may even contain proprietary blends with added benefits for anti-inflammation, joint health or memory support.”

Specifically, men in North America seem to be more lacking than women in magnesium, vitamin B6, zinc, vitamin C, vitamin A, thiamin, and niacin, according to a 2024 study in The Lancet Global Health[1]Passarelli S, Free CM, Alon Shepon, Beal T, Batis C, Golden CD. Global estimation of dietary micronutrient inadequacies: a modelling analysis. The Lancet Glob Health. 2024;12(10):E1590-E1599. .

Formulations will vary, but many multivitamins for men contain:

  • Vitamins A, B, C, D, E and K
  • Thiamine
  • Riboflavin
  • Niacin
  • Pantothenic acid
  • Pyridoxine
  • Biotin
  • Folate
  • Cobalamin
  • Calcium
  • Potassium

Consult with your doctor before starting a multivitamin as some vitamins, like A and E, can be harmful in high doses.

Health Benefits of Men's Multivitamins

While it’s always a good idea to speak with your doctor before starting a multivitamin regime, certain individuals may benefit from multivitamins more than others, including:

  • Pregnant individuals
  • Older adults
  • Individuals taking certain medications (like diuretics or proton pump inhibitors)
  • Individuals with conditions that affect absorption of nutrients (like those with celiac disease or who have undergone surgery on the digestive tract)

Multivitamins are designed to address nutritional gaps that, over time, may lead to certain health conditions, such as rickets (a bone disease in children) and scurvy (a disease caused by a severe lack of vitamin C). They may also help address poor nutrition due to life circumstances or digestive issues.

Are Multivitamins Safe?

It is possible to have too much of a good thing, even when it comes to multivitamins. Take caution in using them, warns Kostro Miller, particularly if you have certain medical conditions or are taking other supplements. “Toxicity and over-supplementation can be real concerns and present with symptoms such as skin discoloration, pain, kidney stress and more,” she says.

Kostro Miller notes that, specifically, fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K should not be overconsumed. “Fat-soluble vitamins are not excreted easily by the body and can build up over time, leading to toxicity,” she says. Other examples include too much selenium causing hair loss and too much iron causing dark stools.

It’s hard to deny the convenience of these supplements, but multivitamins shouldn’t be your only source of nutrients. Talk to your doctor to get a more personalized sense of how to add multivitamins to your diet.

Potential Side Effects

You’re more likely to experience side effects from multivitamins such as nausea or headaches if you’re taking capsules or tablets at high doses. Keep in mind that many nutrients are obtained from foods consuming foods in addition to daily supplements. Some supplements can increase risk of bleeding and can interact negatively with such prescribed medications as blood thinners or cancer treatments.

You may also experience side effects from taking supplements if you take several different supplements or if you take supplements instead of prescribed medications.

How to Choose the Best Multivitamin for Men

The type of multivitamin you need depends on your age, diet and any health conditions you may have. Most offer the basic essential vitamins and minerals, but different formulas contain specific blends.

If you’re over the age of 50, for example, you should choose a multivitamin specifically for 50+, says Kostro Miller: “These tend to have higher levels of vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin D and B,” she says. If you want to increase your stamina or boost your metabolism, she adds, look for a brand that supports that.

You’ll find multivitamins for men in the form of tablets, liquid supplements or gummies.

Final Thoughts

Our top pick for the best multivitamins for men is Nature Made Multi for Him, which comes highly recommended by three of our panelists. This multivitamin is “one of the most accessible and affordable multivitamins on the market, says Fiske, who also notes that it’s USP-certified and doesn’t contain megadoses of vitamins or minerals. Other noteworthy vitamins that made our list include Theralogix Solo Vitamin and Mineral Supplement and One a Day Men.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the best multivitamin for men?

The best multivitamin for you will depend on many factors, including your age, personal health history and whether you are taking any other medications. Talk with your doctor before selecting a multi to help inform your decision.

What is a multivitamin good for?

One of the main benefits of a multivitamin is that it can help supply nutrients your normal diet may not, due to life circumstances or underlying conditions.

When is the best time to take a multivitamin?

Some supplement companies recommend taking your multivitamin with your largest meal of the day to allow for optimal absorption. Read the label carefully, or better yet, speak with your doctor about the best time to take your selected multivitamin.

Do I need a specific multivitamin if I’m over 40 or 50?

Certain brands of multivitamins are marketed for individuals over the age of 40, 50, 60 and older. These targeted multis often contain more or less of certain nutrients that may benefit older individuals.

How much do multivitamins cost?

The cost of multivitamins varies depending on the brand, ingredients and the formulation.

What essential vitamins and nutrients do men need?

While the exact combination of vitamins and minerals a man may need will depend on factors such as age, personal health history and current medications, a few ingredients that typically show up in multivitamins for men include:

• Vitamins A, B, C, D, E and K

• Thiamine

• Riboflavin

• Niacin

• Pantothenic acid

• Pyridoxine

• Biotin

• Folate

• Cobalamin

• Calcium

• Potassium

Are multivitamins for men necessary?

Multivitamins are not essential, “if your diet is very well-rounded with a variety of fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, grains and proteins, you may be able to hit all your nutritional targets through food alone,” says Kostro Miller.

The main benefit, she explains, is that it, “covers your nutritional bases” and supplies nutrients your normal diet may not. “For example, vegans and vegetarians tend to present with nutrient deficiencies in iron, vitamin D and B12, to name a few,” she says. “Taking a multivitamin is almost always necessary for those individuals.”

Other groups who may want to consider taking a multivitamin for men include:

• Adults age 50 and older: Older adults are at an increased risk of nutritional deficiencies due to decreases in appetite and difficulty absorbing certain vitamins and minerals. What’s more, taking a multivitamin can help maintain cognitive function for those 60 and older. Older adults may want to consider taking a multivitamin that specifically contains vitamin B12, according to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements.

• Those who take certain medications: Some prescription medications like diuretics can deplete levels of magnesium, potassium and calcium in the body, according to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Other medications, like proton pump inhibitors commonly prescribed for heartburn and acid reflux and certain Parkinson’s disease medications can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb nutrients like B vitamins, calcium and magnesium.

• Individuals with malabsorption conditions: Those who experience conditions that interfere with digestion like celiac disease, ulcerative colitis or cystic fibrosis may have difficulty absorbing some nutrients. Taking a multivitamin can help ensure you get adequate amounts of necessary vitamins and minerals.

• Those who adhere to strict diets: People who eat low-calorie diets or avoid specific foods (like vegans and vegetarians) may benefit from taking supplements that contain nutrients such as iron and vitamin D.
