Our Verdict

Our Verdict

As someone who has long favored low annual fee credit cards, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card (rates & fees) is the first premium rewards card I ever applied for and owned. I’ve never regretted the decision, and I’m still a Venture X cardholder today because it has consistently provided me with more value annually than its $395 annual cost. The card punches well above its weight and legitimately competes with the most expensive, benefit-rich cards on the market.

What We Love About the Capital One Venture X

2X Miles on Every Purchase

One thing I appreciate most about my Venture X is that it earns at least 2X miles on every purchase. This makes it an excellent daily use card for purchases that don’t typically earn bonus rewards with my other cards—things like my utility and cellphone bills, purchases at my local hardware store and medical bills.

Premium Perks Without the Premium Price

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card has a $395 annual fee. That’s not cheap per se, but it’s quite a bit lower than the annual fees of competing premium travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and the American Express Platinum Card® (Terms apply, see rates & fees). Despite its comparatively lower cost, the Venture X doesn’t skimp on perks. Here are the most notable travel benefits that have convinced me that the Venture X card’s annual fee is well worth it:

  • $300 annual travel credit. Get a $300 annual credit for Capital One Travel bookings.
  • 10,000-mile anniversary bonus. Receive 10,000 bonus miles each year on your card member anniversary. Those 10,000 miles are worth $100 when redeemed for travel.
  • Lounge access. Gain access to over 1,300 lounges worldwide (after enrollment), including Priority Pass™ lounges, as well as the few (but growing) number of Capital One Lounges currently available.
  • Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® credit. Receive a credit of up to $120 for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® application fees charged to the card.

In addition to these benefits, the Venture X also grants complimentary Hertz President’s Circle® status^, which offers benefits like guaranteed upgrades and the widest selection of rental cars upon enrollment. Cardholders also get access to Capital One’s Premier and Lifestyle Collections, which are curated groups of luxury hotels that come with perks like an experience credit, room upgrades (when available), early check-in and late checkout (when available).

Range of Redemption Options, From Beginner to Advanced

Regardless of your experience with credit card rewards, the Capital One Venture X has a redemption method that could fit your needs—from covering travel purchases to booking reservations through Capital One Travel to transferring miles to travel loyalty partners. We’ll cover each of these redemption options in detail.

Other Capital One Venture X Credit Card Benefits

  • No foreign transaction fees. The Capital One Venture X doesn’t charge foreign purchase fees, making it an excellent card for international trips and purchases.
  • Cellphone protection. This is one of my favorite ancillary benefits of the Venture X, as it’s helped me replace a broken cellphone more than once. When you pay your monthly wireless bill with your covered Capital One card, your cellphone is protected for the next calendar month. So, you can get reimbursed if your cellphone is stolen or damaged ($50 deductible).
  • Auto rental collision damage waiver. Count on built-in auto rental coverage. Save money by saying no at the counter—rent with your Venture X card and get built-in auto rental coverage.
  • Lost luggage reimbursement. Your bags are covered against common carrier-caused loss or theft with lost luggage reimbursement when you use your Venture X card to purchase common carrier tickets.
  • Extended warranty protection. Extend qualifying product warranties automatically when you make a purchase using your Venture X card.
  • Return protection. Keep your options open with 90 days of return protection when you make a qualifying purchase with your card.
  • Visa Infinite Concierge. As a Visa Infinite card, the Venture X provides access to the Visa Infinite Concierge to help with requests like restaurant reservations, event tickets and more.

What We Don’t Love About the Capital One Venture X

No Bonus Miles for Travel Purchased Outside of Capital One Travel

The Venture X card earns 5X to 10X for eligible Capital One Travel bookings, but you won’t earn extra miles for other travel purchases, such as those made directly with an airline or hotel. This could be particularly disappointing for those with elite status with one or more hotel brands, as hotels don’t typically provide status benefits to members who book through third-party portals like Capital One Travel.

Poor Cash Redemption Rates

While the Venture X has some excellent redemption options, cash back isn’t one of them. If redeeming your rewards for cash is important to you, consider a different travel card.

Who Is the Venture X Card Best For?

Ideal For:

  • Frequent travelers who will use the card’s lounge access and other travel perks
  • Those who are looking for a card that offers an elevated flat rate on all purchases
  • Points and miles enthusiasts who are willing to learn strategies to maximize Capital One’s international airline partners

Not Ideal For:

  • Travelers who want to earn bonus points on bookings made directly with travel companies
  • Those who like to periodically redeem their rewards for cash back

Capital One Venture X Credit Requirements

Prospective cardholders must meet the following requirements:

  • Excellent credit (generally required for top rewards cards)
  • Keep in mind that credit scores are only guidelines and do not guarantee approval. Other factors are also considered.

Capital One Venture X Credit Card Rewards

Earning Rewards

The Venture X card’s earnings structure makes it easy to build up rewards quickly. You’ll earn:

  • 2 miles per dollar on all eligible purchases
  • 5 miles per dollar on flights and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel
  • 5 miles per dollar on Capital One Entertainment purchases through 12/31/25
  • 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars when booking via Capital One Travel

You can earn a hefty welcome bonus of 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.

Remember, you’ll also get 10,000 bonus miles each year, starting with your first card member anniversary.

Redeeming Rewards

After accumulating Capital One miles, you can redeem them in several ways. Here’s a breakdown of the various redemption options for your Venture X rewards.

Cover Travel Purchases

10,000 miles = $100

One of the easiest ways to use points at a respectable value is to cover travel purchases. Simply make eligible purchases on the card and then log in to your account to reimburse yourself after the transaction posts.

This redemption method is highly flexible. A surprisingly wide variety of purchases qualify as “travel” with Capital One. Airlines, hotels, rail lines, car rental agencies, limousine services, bus lines, cruise lines, taxi cabs, travel agents and time shares are generally considered travel purchases.

Book Travel Through Capital One Travel

10,000 miles = $100

You can book hotels, airfare, rental cars and more through Capital One Travel and use your miles to cover a portion or all of the cost. If you don’t have enough rewards to cover the entire booking, you can charge the remainder to your Venture X card and earn miles as usual for the paid portion of the reservation.

Transfer Miles to a Capital One Travel Partner

10,000 miles = Up to 10,000 partner miles or points (variable redemption value)

One of the best ways to maximize your Venture X rewards is to transfer them to over 15 travel loyalty programs. Those transfer partners include:

Airline Partners

Hotel Partners

While Capital One doesn’t have many domestic airline partners, you can book domestic flights with many of its international airline partners that are part of airline alliances or have forged separate airline partnerships.

For example, you could transfer Capital One miles to British Airways to book a flight on Oneworld alliance partner American Airlines. I used this strategy to fly my family of four to Honolulu for a spring break vacation. Learning to optimize redemptions for each of Capital One’s travel partners can help you gain the most value from your miles.

Transferring miles can feel daunting, but you might find inspiration from a few of the redemption sweet spots outlined specifically using Capital One transfer partners.

Other Redemptions

10,000 miles = Varies by redemption method

Capital One Rewards are designed to be redeemed for travel, but other redemption options include cash back, gift cards and more. We recommend avoiding these nontravel redemptions, as they typically offer lower redemption rates and their redemption values can change at any time.

Rewards Potential

Forbes Advisor uses data from various government agencies to determine baseline income and spending averages across various categories, which we use to compile the rewards potential for various credit cards. The 70th percentile of wage-earning households brings in $127,200 annually and has $40,398 in annual card spending. Here’s an example of the number of rewards a Venture X cardholder can expect to earn in a year:

Category Earning Rate Estimated Annual Spend Estimated Annual Earnings
Hotels Booked Through Capital One Travel
10X
$5,926
59,260
Flights Booked Through Capital One Travel

Capital One Entertainment Purchases (Through 12/31/25)
5X
$886
4,430
All Other Purchases
2X
$31,976
63,952
Total: 135,692 Capital One Rewards

The table above represents the ongoing rewards earned on the Capital One Venture X based on our spending assumptions, but it could be worth even more in your first card member year if you’re able to earn its welcome bonus of 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. It also doesn’t include the 10,000 anniversary miles cardholders receive every year after the first anniversary.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card vs. American Express Platinum Card®

The American Express Platinum Card® (Terms apply, see rates & fees) costs more than twice as much as the Venture X, but its extra perks offer astounding annual value through various benefits that can make it worth the upcharge for the right person. It opens the doors to more lounges than any other card on the market, and Amex has one of the largest lists of airline and hotel transfer partners.

For a deeper comparison of these cards, see our complete guide to the Capital One Venture X vs. American Express Platinum.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card vs. Chase Sapphire Reserve®

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® also has an enormous annual fee that’s nearly double what the Venture X’s charges. In exchange, the Sapphire Reserve offers an extensive list of credits and perks, including a more user-friendly $300 travel credit that can be used for virtually any travel purchase. It provides access to both Priority Pass lounges and the Chase Sapphire by The Club network of lounges.

The cards come with similar travel benefits and each offer hefty earning bonuses for booking travel through their respective issuer portals. The Sapphire Reserve also earns 4X for travel purchases made directly with airlines or hotels, but just 1X for other travel purchases, making the Venture X’s 2X base rate more rewarding for those travel expenses.

Read our complete comparison of the Capital One Venture X vs. Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card vs. Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

If you like the rewards structure of the Venture X but don’t need all the extra perks, consider the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, which has a much lower annual fee (rates & fees). While it earns slightly less on Capital One Travel bookings, it earns the same 2X miles on every other purchase.

You won’t get lounge access, but you can get an up to $120 in credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® application fees. Plus, you’ll have all the same mile redemption options available to Venture X cardholders—including transfers to travel partners—at a fraction of the yearly cost.

If you’ve been interested in lavish travel perks offered by premium cards but turned off by the high fees, the Venture X might be your best first foray into luxury cards. If you use the annual $300 travel credit for bookings through Capital One Travel and 10,000 anniversary bonus miles, the annual fee is essentially negated.

Although it’s a stellar card, I already have a Chase Sapphire Reserve® and American Express Platinum Card®. Between the rewards and perks on these two cards, it doesn’t make sense for me to add the Capital One Venture X to my wallet right now.

I’m a big fan of my Venture X. Since it earns a base of 2X miles everywhere, I use it as my “fill-in” card for all my purchases that don’t fall within the bonus categories of my other cards. And I love that I can completely offset the annual fee simply by using my $300 annual travel credit for bookings through Capital One Travel and redeeming my 10,000 anniversary bonus miles toward $100 worth of travel.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is the Venture X removing free airport lounge guest access?

Yes, starting February 1, 2026, Venture X primary cardholders will no longer be able to bring along two guests with them for free to Priority Pass and Capital One Lounges. After that date, there will be a fee for each guest visiting Priority Pass lounges, and Venture X cardholders will receive discounted guest pricing for Capital One Lounges.

Cardholders who spend at least $75,000 per calendar year will be allowed to bring two complimentary guests to Capital One Lounges. However, there won’t be a path to unlock complimentary guest access to Priority Pass lounges.

Are Venture X authorized users losing free airport lounge access?

Yes, starting February 1, 2026, Venture X additional cardholders will no longer have complimentary access to lounges. Primary cardholders will have the option to pay a lounge access fee of $125 per authorized user to keep their lounge access to Priority Pass lounges and Capital One Lounges.

What is the Capital One Venture X referral bonus?

Venture X cardholders can earn a bonus if someone they refer to the card applies and is approved. Referral amounts can vary, but cardholders are most often offered 25,000 miles per approved referral, up to 100,000 miles per calendar year. Before sending links to friends and family, please read over the terms and conditions of Capital One’s credit card referral program.

How do I upgrade the Capital One Venture to the Venture X?

You must hold the Venture Rewards card for at least a year before you’re eligible to upgrade to the Venture X. If you meet that requirement, you can call the number on the back of your card to request an upgrade. You can also check for upgrade offers inside your Capital One account.

Upgrading may mean you miss out on a welcome bonus. If you’re eligible for a welcome bonus, consider applying for a new card instead of upgrading.
