Use of trademarks in projects and other content
This documentation needs review. See "Help improve this page" in the sidebar.
Use of trademarks on Drupal.org is subject to both US and International law. The owner of a trademark may request that usage of their trademark is removed, and in some cases, may be able to request to claim content on Drupal.org that has been posted under their trademark.
Conditions for use of a trademark
In order to use a trademark, a user must own that trademark, have explicit permission to use that trademark, or be using it under the terms of Trademark Fair Use.
Filing a claim as a trademark owner
The first step for any trademark owners should be an attempt to reach out to the existing maintainer. It is an opportunity for collaboration with someone who has made a significant investment in your technology within the Drupal community. The trademark holder can do so by opening an issue in the project queue, or by clicking on the maintainer's user name and using their contact form to send a message.
In the event of a non-responsive or uncooperative maintainer, the trademark holder or their representative can reach out to the Drupal.org volunteer site moderation team in the site moderator issue queue, or send an email to Drupal Association staff at help@drupal.org
Please include proof of your authorization to act on behalf of the trademark holder.
Recommendations for project names
We strongly recommend against using trademarks in Drupal project names, especially in the shortname/machine name of a project because that shortname/machine name cannot be changed. If a trademark holder claims their rights for a project shortname already in use, that project namespace must be given to their control under current law, and they may choose to publish new code to that namespace. In such cases, we will always attempt to encourage a trademark holder to work with an existing contributor, but we cannot enforce that. If the existing contributor and trademark holder are unable to work together, we can help to move the existing project to a new namespace not using the trademark.
Users should take similar care when using trademarks on any other content on Drupal.org, such as organization profiles, case studies, etc.
