The Office US star Steve Carell has shared his reaction to the hit sitcom's upcoming spin-off series.

It was recently announced that a currently-untitled mockumentary, which will be set in the same universe as The Office US and star Domhnall Gleeson (Star Wars) in a lead role, has officially been granted a series order over at Peacock.

Carell, who played Dunder Mifflin boss Michael Scott from The Office US's inception in 2005 until his departure in 2011, has now shared his enthusiasm.

"I'm excited about it. It sounds like a great conceit. I love the idea," the actor said during a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

"I guess it's set in a failing newspaper company, and I worked with Domnhall Gleeson, who is one of the leads. I did The Patient with him and he's an excellent actor and a super nice guy, so I think it's gonna be great."

However, don't expect Michael Scott to make an appearance, as Carell added: "I will be watching but I will not be showing up. That is off the cards.

"It's just a new thing. There's really no reason for my character to show up in something like that."

The Office US co-creator Greg Daniels has teamed up with Michael Koman to create the spin-off, which is slated to begin production this July with cast members Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus).

The show will follow the same documentary crew who immortalised Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch as they find a new subject in "a dying historic Midwestern newspaper".
