Tonight's The Great British Bake Off referenced an original controversial moment, with baker Iain creating his Showstopper in the shape of a bin, paying homage to Bin-Gate and ‘another Iain from Belfast’.

But what actually happened in the tent that day that caused such uproar?

Let’s take you back to 2014 for the show's fifth series. Bake Off was still a BBC show with Paul Hollywood judging alongside Mary Berry, and Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins hosting.

Contestants were tasked with creating a baked Alaska for the Showstopper on the hottest day of the year. So far, so expected Bake Off.

But things took a turn when Diana Beard removed Iain Watters dessert from the freezer making room for her own. The result was Iain trying to remove the dessert from the mould, and ending with a plate of melted slop.

In an angry move, he threw the whole thing in the bin. When it came to judging, he dragged the bin up with him, leaving Mary and Paul unable to taste any of what he had created.

Paul told off the baker, saying they could have tasted the other elements such as the sponge, and Iain was obviously eliminated.

The outrage from viewers was unprecedented with some calling for Diana to be arrested.

The BBC even had to step in to defend her, revealing the moment wasn't quite as it looked on screen.

In a statement, the corporation said: "Diana removing Iain's ice cream from the freezer for less than a minute was in no way responsible for Iain's departure."

Iain also defended Diana when he appeared on Newsnight (that's how big a scandal this was) admitting his reaction was just down to frustration.

"I knew it was going to be big but it's gone nuts today. The reaction has been crazy," he said at the time.

"The pressure in the tent is really huge and different from baking at home. I don't hold any grudges against Diana."

He continued: "I feel bad for Diana because she's had quite a mauling on Twitter and I don't like all the nasty comments that have been directed towards her. I think it's a bit unfair and I do think they could have edited the episode a bit better."

Diana had to withdraw from the show the following week after suffering from a fall - with the BBC again having to defend her exit had nothing to do with Bin-Gate.

The Great British Bake Off and its spin-off Bake Off: An Extra Slice both air on Channel 4 in the UK. In the US, it's known as The Great British Baking Show, and streams on Netflix.
