"We are heartbroken. Liam will forever live in our hearts and we'll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul," it reads (per BBC News).

"We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time."

Payne's family includes his mother Karen, an infant nurse, and Geoff, a fitter. He has two older sisters, Nicola and Ruth.

In the 2013 documentary One Direction: This Is Us, which followed One Direction's rise to fame and becoming one of the best-selling boybands of all time, Karen could be seen crying as she purchased a cardboard cut-out of Liam at Madison Square Garden in New York.

She told filmmakers at the time: "We miss him. He left home, my little boy, and became the boy in a magazine. If I have this, I can still see him every day. When I see him on stage, I absolutely burst with pride, but we do miss him so much.

"I shed tears just looking at him. They become someone in a newspaper or a magazine to you. I always believed Liam would make it, but never this big. Never in my wildest dreams. He goes away for so long."

Payne is survived by his son Bear, whom he and ex-partner Cheryl welcomed in 2017.

The musician rose to fame after forming boyband One Direction in 2010 on The X Factor alongside band members Horan, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson.

The group was famed for singles such as 'What Makes You Beautiful', 'Kiss You', 'Night Changes', and 'Best Song Ever' before their "indefinite hiatus" in 2015.
