Pair of seeded Canadians upset at Toronto

Fifth-seeded Denis Shapovalov and No. 9 Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada were upset in straight sets in front of their home crowd Wednesday in Toronto.

Lucky loser Frances Tiafoe of the U.S. knocked off Shapovalov 6-1, 6-4 in one hour, 15 minutes, while Serbian Dusan Lajovic upset Auger-Aliassime 7-5, 6-4.

Auger-Aliassime had six aces to none for Lajovic but the Canadian failed to break the Serb while Lajovic converted 2 of 5 break points.

"I'm happy with the way that I was able to play from the beginning until the end," Lajovic said. "The game at 4-3 in the second set when I was serving was a really tricky one. I'm happy that I had a little bit of luck in some moments but the most important thing was that was able to control the match and the way that I was able to make him uncomfortable."

Auger-Aliassime also suffered from three double faults.

"If you look at the match overall, especially in the second set, I felt like I had chances where I could have done better to get a break, to give myself a chance of maybe going three sets, but it is what it is," Auger-Aliassime said.

Shapovalov had defeated Tiafoe four of the five times they played previously. Tiafoe did not face a break point in ousting the last Canadian from the tournament.

Shapovalov's loss ensured that the 60-year-plus streak of a Canadian male not winning the singles title at the tourney will continue. The last Canadian to win the men's singles event was Robert Bedard in 1958.
