Senators acquire D Gudbranson from Ducks

The Ottawa Senators acquired defenseman Erik Gudbranson from the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick in 2021.

Gudbranson, 28, has appeared in 518 career games in nine seasons with the Florida Panthers (2011-12 to 2015-16), Vancouver Canucks (2016-17 to 2018-19), Pittsburgh Penguins (2018-19 to 2019-20) and Anaheim (2019-20). The stay-at-home defenseman has notched 73 points (20 goals, 53 assists) while accumulating 581 penalty minutes.

He split last season between Pittsburgh and Anaheim, notching four goals, five assists and 95 penalty minutes.

The trade represents a homecoming for Gudbranson, who was born in Ottawa and played for the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League as an amateur. He was the No. 3 overall pick by the Panthers in 2010.

"Erik Gudbranson provides another sizable presence to our defense corps," Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said. "He's a reliable veteran who plays an intimidating style of game and someone who will add a combination of grit, energy and, most importantly, leadership to our lineup."
