Reports: Cubs' Zobrist to work toward comeback
Veteran infielder/outfielder Ben Zobrist, who left the Chicago Cubs in May amid family issues, hopes to return to the team this season, according to multiple reports.
Cubs president Theo Epstein told reporters that Zobrist, 38, is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment in the next week.
"Zo has indicated to us that he does plan on attempting to come back," Epstein said Friday, per MLB.com. "That's really good news."
Zobrist left the team when both he and his wife, Julianna, filed for divorce. He has been on the restricted list.
Under major league rules, non-suspended players on the restricted are allowed 30 days to rehab. The Cubs must reinstate him no later than Aug. 31 for him to have postseason eligibility.
"We're thrilled by the news, happy for him, happy for us," Epstein told the Chicago Tribune. "We understand there are still a lot of steps that must happen. We think there's a chance he'll come back and help our depth.
"He brings unique things to the table in the clubhouse and on the field. We hope for our sake and his he's able to complete this process and contribute."
Zobrist is the final year of a four-year, $56 million contract.
A three-time All-Star in his 14th major league season, he has appeared in 26 games this season, hitting .241 with 10 RBIs. He is a career .266 hitter.
