CONCACAF Gold Cup: Panama tops T&T

Armando Cooper and Edgar Yoel Barcenas scored goals 15 minutes apart early in the second half as Panama defeated Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 to open Group D play in the CONCACAF Gold Cup at Saint Paul, Minn.

Panama dominated on the stat sheet, finishing with a 17-6 edge in shot attempts and a 7-0 advantage in shots on goal.

The game was the opener of a doubleheader at Allianz Field, with the United States making its tournament debut under new head coach Gregg Berhalter with a matchup against Guyana.

Group D will continue Saturday in Cleveland, where Guyana will oppose Panama before the United States meets Trinidad and Tobago. The group concludes June 26 at Kansas City, Kan., with Trinidad and Tobago vs. Guyana as well as Panama vs. the United States.
