Tanigawa leads by two in Japan
Ken Tanigawa opened his bid for a third PGA Tour Champions title by firing a bogey-free 65 in the opening round of the Mastercard Japan Championship on Friday at Narita Gold Club.
Tanigawa, in his second year on the Champions Tour, leads both Doug Garwood and Dudley Hart by two strokes.
A group containing Darren Clarke, Steve Flesch, Paul Goydos, Colin Montgomerie and Fran Quinn is another stroke back.
"I did everything kind of OK; I missed it in the right spots, I made some putts," said Tanigawa, who won the Senior PGA Championship two weeks ago. "I didn't make any bogeys, which is always a nice thing when you're playing a round of golf. So overall it's just a very solid round of golf."
Tanigawa currently sits second in the Schwab Cup Standings.
Scott McCarron, who leads the standings, is four strokes back at 3-under 69. McCarron ($1,366,211) leads Tanigawa by nearly a half-million dollars in 2019.
McCarron is looking for his third win of the season and 11th overall.
