Penn, Yeaney lead Indiana to upset of Texas
Sophomore guard Jaelynn Penn scored a game-high 24 points as 10th-seeded Indiana upset seventh-seeded Texas 69-65 Friday in the opening round of the Women's NCAA Tournament in Eugene, Ore.
Bendu Yeaney, a native of Portland, Ore., added 17 points and a team-high six rebounds for the Hoosiers (21-12), who won an NCAA Tournament game for just the third time in program history. Indiana will play either No. 2-seeded Oregon or No. 15 Portland State in the second round Sunday.
Danni Williams led the Longhorns (23-10) with 15 points. Joyner Holmes added 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds and Jatarie White scored 11. The Longhorns, whose 32 tourney appearances ranks fourth all-time, were seeded seventh for the third time and have lost all three.
Ali Patberg, who leads the Hoosiers with 16.0 points per game, was limited to 10 points but made two clinching free throws with 12 seconds remaining. Patberg also had a game-high seven assists and added five rebounds and three steals.
Sug Sutton, the Longhorns' leading scorer, had eight points, eight rebounds and six assists. But she tripped in front of the Texas bench as she took a pass with 17 seconds left and the Longhorns trailing by two, losing the ball out of bounds.
Indiana dominated the first and third quarters, while the Longhorns had a 20-6 scoring edge in the second. The Hoosiers outscored the Longhorns 17-16 in the fourth quarter.
Penn scored eight points as Indiana took a 23-17 lead in the first quarter.
The Longhorns rallied in the second to take a 37-29 halftime lead.
The Hoosiers opened the third with a 17-3 run to regain the lead. Texas was limited to three field goals and committed 11 turnovers in the quarter. Indiana outscored the Longhorns 23-12 in the quarter to take a 52-49 lead into the fourth quarter.
