George Washington fires coach Joseph
George Washington fired head coach Maurice Joseph on Friday after compiling a 44-57 record in three seasons.
Joseph, 33, guided the Colonials to a 20-15 record in his first full season in 2016-17, but slipped to 15-18 the next year and went 9-24 this season -- matching the program's fewest wins since 2007-08.
George Washington's season ended Thursday with a second-round loss to George Mason in the Atlantic 10 tournament.
"This decision was necessary because we are not reaching our full potential on the court," athletic director Tanya Vogel said in a statement. "Our university leadership and I have high expectations for what this program can achieve in the near future."
Joseph had taken over as interim coach in 2016 after former coach Mike Lonergan was fired amid allegations of verbally and emotionally abusing players.
Joseph signed a five-year deal with the Colonials in March 2017.
