Jets fire HC Bowles
The New York Jets fired head coach Todd Bowles Sunday, hours after the Jets were embarrassed in their season finale by the New England Patriots 38-3.
"I would like to thank Coach Bowles for his dedication to the New York Jets for the last four years," Jets CEO Christopher Johnson said in a statement. "After carefully evaluating the situation, I have concluded that this is the right direction for the organization to take. I would like to wish Todd, Taneka and their family only the best."
In four seasons in New York, Bowles went 24-40 and failed to lead the team to the playoffs.
In his first season in 2015, the Jets finished 10-6, but successive 5-11 records followed, and they closed this season at 4-12 despite a 3-3 start.
Bowles signed a four-year contract in January 2015 when the Jets hired the then-defensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals. On the final day of the 2017 season, he was given a two-year contract extension through the end of the 2020 season.
Prospective candidates to replace Bowles could include former Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy and former Detroit Lions and Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Caldwell, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
