Dodgers acquire RHP Madson from Nationals

The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired right-handed reliever Ryan Madson from the Washington Nationals, according to multiple reports.

Madson, a 13-year veteran, has struggled this season for the Nationals. He is 2-5 with a 5.28 ERA and four saves in 49 games. On his career, the 38-year-old is 61-48 with a 3.45 ERA and 91 saves.

In exchange, the Nationals will receive minor league right-hander Andrew Istler, according to MLB.com.

Madson is in the final year of a three-year, $22 million contract and will be a free agent after this season.

Madson will be eligible for postseason play, should the Dodgers qualify. Entering play Friday, the Dodgers are two games behind Arizona, their weekend opponent, in the National League West and 2 1/2 games out in the wild card race.

The Dodgers are desperate for bullpen help amid the struggles of closer Kenley Jansen, who is dealing with an irregular heartbeat condition and a reaction to the medication. The bullpen has an ERA of 4.73 this month, and at one point, the team blew five saves in a row.

Since Jansen's return from the disabled list earlier this month, he's allowed seven earned runs in four innings.

Istler, 25, is 4-4 with a 2.37 ERA in 41 appearances (one start) across three minor league levels this season.
