Padres bring up 2B prospect Urias

The San Diego Padres hope they're getting a glimpse of the future with the arrival Tuesday of second baseman Luis Urias.

Urias, rated the No. 22 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline, had his contract selected from Triple-A El Paso. He was listed batting second in the order for Tuesday night's home game against the Seattle Mariners. It would be his major league debut.

In 120 games and 533 plate appearances this season, the 21-year-old Urias hit .296 with a .398 on-base percentage with Triple-A El Paso. He hit eight homers and drove in 45 runs, with 67 walks and 109 strikeouts.

To make room on the active roster for Urias, the Padres optioned second baseman Carlos Asuaje to El Paso. In 218 plate appearances covering 79 games, Asuaje was hitting .196 with two home runs and 19 RBIs.

The Padres also made a pitching move, sending left-hander Clayton Richard to the disabled list to have season-ending surgery because of inflammation in his left knee.

Manager Andy Green said Tuesday that Richard, 7-11 with a 5.33 ERA, has been trying to pitch through the discomfort since April. Richard has a career record of 68-79 with a 4.46 ERA. He is in his second stint with the Padres, having also pitched for the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs.

Richard's roster spot went to rookie right-hander Colten Brewer, who had been on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain. He previously appeared in four games, giving five hits and four runs -- none earned -- in three innings.
