Jags release WR Hurns, TE Lewis

The Jacksonville Jaguars released wide receiver Allen Hurns and tight end Marcedes Lewis on Tuesday in moves that will save them nearly $11 million against the salary cap.

Hurns signed a four-year, $40 million extension with Jacksonville in 2016 that included $20 million guaranteed and carried a cap hit of $7 million this year. He had 39 catches for 484 yards and two touchdowns last season.

Undrafted out of Miami (Fla.), Hurns has 189 catches for 2,669 yards and 21 touchdowns across his four NFL seasons, all with the Jags. He had a career year in 2015, amassing 1,031 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.

According to Pro Football Talk, Hurns was due to meet first with the New York Jets, but instead he will visit the Dallas Cowboys first due to travel issues.

The (Baton Rouge, La.) Advocate reported that Hurns told Charlotte radio station WFNZ that he had heard from the Chicago Bears, the Buffalo Bills, the New Orleans Saints, the Houston Texans, the Oakland Raiders, the Carolina Panthers and the Jets.

Hurns tweeted Tuesday, "I would like to thank the @jaguars organization for giving me the opportunity to live out my dream. I appreciate it all from the good to the bad. More than anything ima miss the relationships I've built with my brothers in that locker room. Excited to see what's next"

Lewis, 33, was entering the final term of a three-year, $12 million contract that carried a cap hit of $3.75 million in 2018. The tight end had 24 catches for 318 yards and five touchdowns last season.

Lewis has played for the Jags the last 12 seasons after being a first-round pick in the 2006 draft by the team. He's totaled 375 catches for 4,502 yards and 33 touchdowns in that time.

When free agency began last week, the Jaguars lost receiver Allen Robinson to the Bears. The Jaguars opted not to use the prohibitive franchise designation to retain Robinson's first refusal rights in free agency.

Jacksonville signed former Indianapolis Colts wideout Donte Moncrief and re-signed Marqise Lee.
