- Russia's Accounts Chamber has again rapped the government's anti-crisis plan as "badly thought out and useless".
- A court on Wednesday meted out an unprecedentedly severe sentence of 12.5 years in jail and a 60 million rouble ($903,320) fine to the former governor of Yaroslavl Region, Yevgeny Urlashov, known for his opposition views. He was accused for extorting a 18 million rouble ($270,996) bribe from a local businessman.

- Prosecutors may insist on the extension of Urlashov's jail term to 15 years from 12.5 years in case he fails to pay a 60 million rouble fine, the daily writes, adding that the former Yaroslavl governor was not given the right to plead for an early release from prison.
- The Ministry of Communications, Rostelecom and the Institute of the Development of Internet will work on launching a protected internet messenger service for state officials and state-controlled companies.

- Ukraine's breakaway republic of Donetsk is threatening Kiev with new large-scale military actions in the south of the country if the Ukrainian military continue shelling Donetsk's territory.
- Rosnef chief Igor Sechin could file a suit against the opposition Novaya Gazeta paper, as well as the Dozhd television channel and some other mass media editions, for spreading slander about his private life.
- Russia is ready to supply Iran with a second batch of its C-300 anti-aircraft systems upon receiving payment for the order, the daily says, referring to a meeting on the leaders of the two states in Baku scheduled for Aug 8.

- The Justice Ministry has registered the pro-Kremlin military youth movement "Yunarmia" (The Young Army), which will become "the most mobile, the largest and most efficient military patriotic organization for children and young people in the country", according to Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu.
- Russia's airlines are worried by the regular clashes of their planes with birds at takeoff and landing which lead to serious damages of the aircraftes, the daily writes, citing a Rosaviation report on at least 30 such accidents this year.
- Russia's military have already received first samples of combat laser, the daily reports, citing Deputy Defence Minister Yuri Borisov. Russia plans to create laser complexes to destroy spying appliances of the enemy in the air, the daily adds.
