Togo opposition march broken up with teargas

LOME, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Security forces in Togo's capital Lome fired teargas on Friday to break up a march organised by opposition parties, after demonstrators left an approved route and headed towards parliament, a Reuters witness said.

The demonstrators, who numbered several thousand, were calling upon the government to implement an agreed presidential term limit that should see President Faure Gnassingbe step down next year.

Supporters of Gnassingbe organised a larger march earlier on Friday that was held without incident, according to the witness.

Gnassingbe was installed as president with army support when his father Gnassingbe Eyadema, who ruled the West African nation for 38 years, died in 2005. Gnassingbe stepped down under regional pressure but won an election several months later and was re-elected for a second term in 2010.
