MLB roundup: Phillies rookie hits for cycle

Rookie Weston Wilson hit for the cycle and Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos belted back-to-back homers in the first inning, lifting the Philadelphia Phillies to a 13-3 victory over the visiting Washington Nationals on Thursday. Wilson tripled and singled in the fourth, crushed a solo homer in the seventh and completed the cycle with a double in the eighth. He is the first Philadelphia rookie ever to accomplish the feat. Soccer-Pochettino agrees to become U.S. men's coach - report

Former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has agreed to take over as coach of the United States men's team, according to an ESPN report on Thursday. The report said the Argentine, who has been out of work since parting ways with Chelsea in May after one season with the Premier League side, would lead the team into the 2026 World Cup being co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Report: Cowboys signing former Jets DE Carl Lawson

The Dallas Cowboys are signing former New York Jets defensive end Carl Lawson, ESPN reported Thursday. The 29-year-old pass rusher worked out for the Cowboys in Oxnard, Calif., after they lost Sam Williams to a torn ACL earlier in training camp.

Russell Wilson slated to start preseason game vs. Bills

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Thursday that veteran quarterback Russell Wilson will start Sunday night against the Buffalo Bills if he doesn't have a setback with his calf injury. Wilson suffered the injury on the eve of the team's first training camp practice and it has caused him to miss practices and the team's preseason debut against the Houston Texans last week. The nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback is in his first season with the Steelers after he was released in March by the Denver Broncos two years into a five-year, $245 million contract.

Falcons acquire pass rusher Matthew Judon from Patriots

Pass rusher Matthew Judon was traded from New England to the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday in exchange for a 2025 third-round draft pick, ending a contract-related dispute with the Patriots. Judon, who celebrated his 32nd birthday Thursday, had 28.0 sacks in his first two seasons with the Patriots but his 2023 campaign was cut short because of a biceps rupture.

NBA schedule release: Champion Celtics open vs. Knicks

The Boston Celtics will raise their 18th championship banner on Oct. 22 before hosting the rival New York Knicks for the first game of the 2024-25 NBA season. Brewers All-Star Christian Yelich to have season-ending surgery

The Milwaukee Brewers' hopes of holding on to their lead in the National League Central race took a blow Thursday when the club announced that All-Star left fielder Christian Yelich will undergo season-ending back surgery. Yelich hasn't played since July 23. He spent the past three weeks having treatment in an attempt to return and help the Brewers win their third division title in the past four seasons. Milwaukee enters Friday with a nine-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds.

Basketball-WNBA to hold 2025 All-Star Game in Indiana to reflect Clark's popularity

The WNBA, looking to capitalise on the popularity of Caitlin Clark, announced on Thursday that its 2025 All-Star Game will be held at the home of the standout rookie's Indiana Fever.

The 21st WNBA All-Star Game, which will be held on July 19, marks the first time Indianapolis will host the league's midseason showcase.

Tennis-Gauff aims to reboot ahead of US Open after Cincinnati shock

Coco Gauff had hoped to reset at the Cincinnati Open after a string of defeats by lower-ranked players, but the American will be seeking answers back at home after a stunning loss in her opener prematurely ended her title defence. The Florida-based 20-year-old arrived in Cincinnati on the back of four tour-level losses to unfancied players going back to the French Open in June and was defeated 6-4 2-6 6-4 by Kazakh world number 34 Yulia Putintseva on Thursday.
