Hamilton urged to enjoy pressure

Anthony Hamilton has urged son Lewis to enjoy the pressure that comes with this year's Formula One world title fight.

Hamilton jnr's victory in Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix has propelled him back into the lead of the championship by just three points ahead of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg.

Hamilton snr and Lewis' stepmother Linda were on hand to watch the 29-year-old take the chequered flag under the bright lights of Marina Bay.

It is the third time this year the couple have attended a race, and the third time Hamilton has gone on to clinch victory.

With five races remaining the finishing line, and the prospect of a second world title, are now clearly in sight.

So far, Hamilton has shown a steely determination to let nothing get in his way of his sole goal - becoming world champion again.

Father Anthony feels Lewis has taken to the track this season with a very different mindset to past years, and that is to have fun.

"He had a plan this year and he's managing himself, that plan, what he wants, really, really well," said Anthony, speaking to Press Association Sport.

"On occasions I've reminded him and said 'when you think about it, we're in Formula One, an amazing sport to be in, and never forget it, so enjoy every minute of every day'.

"He'll have bad days but, do you know what, it actually doesn't matter because we are at the top of the greatest sport in the world.

"If there's pressure, that's the bonus that comes with winning, but really this is a life you have to enjoy because you are only here for a short period of time.

"It's great to win, but the key is enjoying it and he is."

Despite the victories, seven overall from the 14 races to date this season, Anthony concedes the stress Lewis puts him under still has not changed, even after all these years of watching him on track.

"It's the desire for your kid to be safe and to get what he wants," suggested Hamilton snr.

"It's the same feeling I've always had from when Lewis used to be at the back of the grid when he first started go-karting, watching that yellow helmet and thinking 'come through, come through, come on'.

"When it happens it's a great feeling, but the stress level is exactly the same whether it's Formula One or karts. It's just unreal.

"I'm going through the same pain I went through all those years ago - I thought it was over!"

Although Anthony and Linda appear to be Lewis' 'good-luck charms', he will allow his son to determine what he feels is best for him and his routine at the forthcoming races.

Unwilling to impose himself on Lewis, Anthony added: "I really don't know if I will attend any more races. I work this on a day-to-day basis.

"I'm really happy staying at home and watching him on the telly, but there is no greater feeling than being at a track supporting Lewis.

"As long as it's positive for him then that's great."
