DEADLINE LOOMS FOR SEA VIEW CONTEST

Photographers have just three weeks left to submit their entries to a competition looking for the UK's best sea view.

The Shipwrecked Mariners' Society is looking for photos that encapsulate the nation's love of and reliance on the sea.

Entries can be based on any maritime theme, from the work of fishermen and merchant mariners to wildlife or seascapes.

The competition, which is in its second year, has already received over 100 entries.

It will be judged by Matt Havercroft, editor of Discover Britain magazine; Kate Westaway, a marine photographer and TV producer, and Commodore Malcolm Williams, the charity's chief executive.

The winner will receive a five-day return crossing on the P&O Ferries Dover to Calais route. The trip for a car or caravan and up to nine passengers can be booked any time before June 2015.

The Shipwrecked Mariners' Society, which celebrates its 175th anniversary this year, provides financial support to retired seafarers in need and those who are unable to continue working at sea as a result of injury or illness.

Mr Williams said: "We have already seen a great number of entries with a very high standard. With the UK's reliance and connection with the sea being so broad, it is certainly going to be a very tough one to judge."

The deadline for entry is 5pm on August 8. For more details or to enter, visit www.shipwreckedmariners.org.uk.

Photos can also be posted to the charity's Facebook and Twitter pages.
