France, having knocked out Brazil and defending champions Italy, were on a roll but goalkeeper Joel Bats' blunder in allowing Andreas Brehme's free-kick to sneak into the net knocked their confidence. After Maxime Bossis missed an open goal, Rudi Voller added a second in added time.

1982 WORLD CUP SEMI-FINAL, SEVILLE, SPAIN

West Germany 3 France 3 (W Germany win 5-4 on penalties)

The most controversial and contentious meeting of the two nations, remembered for an incident which shamed Germany and their goalkeeper Harald Schumacher. With the score at 1-1 early in the second half, Schumacher rushed out of penalty area to clatter into Patrick Battiston, knocking out several of the Frenchman's teeth and cracking his ribs. The foul went unpunished and, after extra time which saw goals from Marius Treso and Alain Giresse cancelled out by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Klaus Fischer, it was inevitable Schumacher would play a major role in the shoot-out as he blocked spot-kicks from Didier Six and Bossis.

Germany's great defender Franz Beckenbauer's final international appearance did not go to plan as a relatively inexperienced home side beat the reigning world champions thanks to Olivier Rouyer's solitary strike.

1958 WORLD CUP THIRD-PLACE PLAY-OFF, GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN

West Germany 3 France 6

France great Just Fontaine signed off a personally impressive World Cup with four goals to finish the tournament with 13 - a record which still stands. Having lost to Brazil in the semi-finals, the French bounced back with Raymond Kopa and Yvon Douis also on the scoresheet. Hans Cieslarczyk briefly made it 1-1 with further goals from Helmut Rahn and Hans Schafer clawing it back to 4-2 and 5-3 respectively before Fontaine ended proceedings a minute from time.
