JAVID TO PROBE REGIONAL LOTTO FUNDS
Culture Secretary Sajid Javid has signalled he will look into ensuring National Lottery funds are better distributed across the UK.
Ticket sales for the lottery in several regions in the North tend to raise a higher amount of money, although they fail to receive their fair share of funding in return, MPs heard.
Liberal Democrat culture spokesman John Leech (Manchester Withington) pressed Mr Javid to reveal what steps the Government is taking to ensure areas which generate more cash for the lottery receive more funding.
Speaking in the Commons, Mr Javid replied: "You raise an important point about regional distribution of these funds and you're right to do so.
"This is something we discussed with the lottery and will be taking up with them further."
Mr Leech had asked: "Given that many regions, particularly in the North, generate disproportionately more revenue for the National Lottery, what further steps will the Government take to make sure that other regions where more money is being generated actually get their fair share of sport, heritage and arts funding?"
