MOTHER SENTENCED FOR CHILD CRUELTY

A woman who abandoned her newborn baby daughter in undergrowth in a park will be sentenced today after admitting child cruelty.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will appear before a judge at Birmingham Crown Court after pleading guilty in May.

The defendant, in her mid-20s, admitted wilfully abandoning the baby in a manner likely to cause her unnecessary suffering or injury to health.

Given the name Baby Jade by hospital staff, the infant was discovered by a dog-walker in the Stechford area of Birmingham last October.

Police said the child, who was wrapped in a towel inside a carrier bag, could have died within an hour if she had not been found, due to her low body temperature.

She has since been renamed and is known to have made a full recovery from her ordeal.
