FIREFIGHTERS JOIN YES VOTE ALLIANCE

Firefighters for Yes have joined 40 other special interest groups and organisations campaigning for a Yes vote in the independence referendum.

They say that their hopes for a fairer, safer, more just and more prosperous country, and fears of privatisation of public services are their motivation for joining the campaign for independence.

They join the ranks of groups including Academics for Yes, Cabbies for Yes and Farming for Yes.

Firefighter Ewen Macsween, based in Springburn, Glasgow, said: "Firefighters for Yes was formed to pool together the strong feelings that many people in the fire service share about the future of our service and our country.

"We were inspired by the breadth of the Yes movement, with its grassroots approach, which has turned into a flourishing valley of hope for this nation.

"I'm voting Yes to keep public services in public hands and protect them from cuts; to rid Scotland of Trident nuclear weapons and to make better use of our mineral assets and renewable energy supplies.

"Do not be afraid. Be excited, as we need to look to our future and not our past."

Yes Scotland welcomed the announcement from Firefighters for Yes.

Blair Jenkins, Yes Scotland chief executive, said: "There is a powerful consensus in Scotland that will ensure an independent parliament is committed to keeping public services in public hands and securing jobs and wage levels that reward the work people do.

'It's clear that Scotland is wealthy enough to be a fairer nation. The key message is that a Scottish Parliament is more likely than Westminster to make decisions that best serve people in Scotland, whether we elect a Labour or SNP led government.'
