South Korean lawmakers impeached scandal-ridden President Park Geun-hye last week, a stunning and swift fall for the country's first female leader amid protests that drew millions into the streets in united fury. The country's No. 2 official, Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, has assumed leadership until the Constitutional Court rules on whether Park must permanently step down. The court has up to six months to decide.

In other images from the Asia-Pacific region last week, more than 100 people were killed and hundreds injured in a strong earthquake that hit Indonesia's Aceh province on Sumatra island. At least 45,000 people were displaced in the magnitude-6.5 quake, which also destroyed or damaged more than 11,000 buildings, mostly homes, but also several hundred mosques and schools.

Thais marked the birthday of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Bhumibol, who died in October after reigning for 70 years, would have been 89.
