Design accepted for World War I Memorial
WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal commission has selected a design for a World War I memorial to be built in Washington.
The World War I Centennial Commission announced on its website Tuesday that it had chosen a design by sculptor Sabin Howard of New York City and Joseph Weishaar, an architect in Chicago.
According to the commission, "The Weight of Sacrifice" will feature 137-foot-long walls engraved with quotations from service members and a relief sculpture of 23 figures transforming from civilians into war-weary soldiers.
Construction will begin on Veterans Day 2017 at Pershing Park along Pennsylvania Avenue.
