TV comic and political neophyte Jimmy Morales was sworn in as Guatemala's president amid uncertainty over how he plans to run the Central American nation beset by entrenched poverty, rampant corruption and violent criminal gangs. Morales won office in a runoff Oct. 25 after huge anti-corruption demonstrations that helped force out his predecessor.

Nearly 200 Cuban migrants traveled by air and across land through Central America and into southern Mexico on Wednesday, resuming their long-delayed journey toward the United States after several months stranded in Costa Rica amid a diplomatic tiff with Nicaragua.

The air and bus bridge is the first stage of a pilot program to relieve a logjam of some 8,000 Cubans who have been trapped at the Costa Rican border with Nicaragua, which closed its frontier to them in November.

Associated Press photographer Felipe Dana created a collection of images about the artisanal miners and their craft as a work project for the 2015 World Press Photo Latin America masterclass held in Mexico City in December.

The area that Dana documented has been explored for diamonds since the time of slavery. Up to a few years ago, multinational mining companies extracted the stone without concern for the land or the Jequitinhonha River. Today, the devastated area known as Areinha is a no man's land where small groups of rural miners try their luck with artisan techniques.

Toby Price became the first Australian winner of the Dakar Rally motorbikes class.

"Being the first Australian to win the Dakar is just insane. Finishing the rally is already a triumph," Price said, after completing the 13th and final stage Saturday.

In this Monday, Jan. 11, 2016 photo, bullet holes riddle the walls of the second floor of a home that Mexican marines raided in their search for drug lord Joaquin ¿El Chapo¿ Guzman, in Los Mochis, Mexico. At 4:40 a.m. in a central neighborhood of the Pacific coast city, 17 marines began their operation dubbed "black swan." Guzman and his security chief traveled several blocks through the city's storm sewer system, accessed under the home, before popping out in the middle of an intersection. Federal police eventually found them on a highway outside of town, ending Guzman¿s flight six months after his escape from the same maximum security prison where he now sits.
