Capsized boat in Japan leaves 3 dead, 6 missing

Japanese rescuers on Thursday found the bodies of two fishermen from a sunken boat that capsized a day earlier, though six others remain missing, officials said.

The 76-tonne fishing boat Daifukumaru capsized in the Sea of Japan just off Shimane prefecture on the western coast early Wednesday morning.

The two found on Thursday were later confirmed dead, bringing the death toll to three after a body was found the day before.

The latest bodies were identified as the boat's captain Yasushi Okishima, 53, and chief engineer, Yasushi Yoshida, 59, the Japan Coast Guard said.

The man confirmed dead on Wednesday was identified as Yoshihiro Sakamoto, 54, the coast guard said.

The crew consisted of eight Japanese and one Indonesian.

More than 30 special rescuers and divers searched the area on Thursday, the coast guard said.

They spotted the boat some 45 metres (149 feet) below the surface near the site of the accident after a sonar and an underwater camera found a fishnet, according to the coast guard.

One patrol boat would continue the search overnight, while other boats, aircraft and divers would resume searching on Friday, the coast guard said.
