Man shot trying to stop Qld car theft

A 35-year-old man has been charged after allegedly shooting another man who tried to stop him stealing a car in Queensland.

Police say they will allege the 35-year-old attempted to steal a car from outside a Walkerston motel on Saturday evening when he was confronted by a member of the public.

"A 34-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen and was transported to hospital where he remains in a serious condition," a police statement says on Sunday.

Other members of the public restrained the accused armed thief until officers arrived, police say in a statement.

The 35-year-old Walkerston man has been charged with attempted armed robbery and assault occasioning bodily harm whilst armed.

He will appear in the Mackay Magistrates Court on September 6.
