Snow as Vic shivers through cold front
The warm weather that ushered in spring is nowhere to be seen as snow falls and record low temperatures sweep Victoria.
The Bureau of Meteorology is calling it a "wintry blast", with snowfall recorded in areas as low as 200m above sea level on Friday and the maximum temperature set to reach just 12 degrees.
"If we only get to 11.9 it will be the coldest September day in Melbourne since 1974," senior forecaster Keris Arndt said.
"If above 11.9 it will be the coldest since 2002, so either way it's going to definitely be quite a cold day and one that we don't see all that often this time of year."
Snow has been recorded in southwest Victoria around Lismore, an area that rarely sees snow.
Mr Arndt said elevated parts of Melbourne may even see a flurry of snow around the outer north and Dandenongs.
The city's eastern suburbs and other parts of the state have had hail already on Friday and there is a chance thunderstorms could hit Melbourne and surrounding areas in the afternoon, the weather bureau said.
The weekend is expected to remain cold with a top of 13 on Saturday and maximum of 14 on Sunday.
On Tuesday the temperature is forecast to rise back into the 20s.
"I would call it a wintry blast for the end of the week and then a slow climb back to spring," Mr Arndt said.
