SA to fund more training places

The South Australian and federal governments will invest $88 million to fund up to 15,000 new training places in key industries to drive jobs growth.

The Job Trainer program will focus on areas with immediate demand, including aged and disability care but will also look at training more people for emerging industries.

"We need to drive new pathways and employment into new and emerging sectors, such as cybersecurity, defence and the creative industries, which are key to the state's future economic growth," Premier Steven Marshall said.

The SA government will provide $53.5 million for the program and the commonwealth $34.5 million.

Federal Employment Minister Michaelia Cash said strengthening Australia's skills and training system was a priority as the nation responded to COVID-19.

"Job Trainer is central to Australia's recovery. It will provide Australians with new opportunities and skills," she said.

SA Innovation Minister David Pisoni said training would be delivered through a mix of short courses and wider qualifications to support people entering the workforce and those retraining.

"Engaging the vocational education and training sector and supporting school leavers, young people and job seekers into training and employment will lead to sustainable careers in priority sectors for South Australia," Mr Pisoni said.
